Royal Air Maroc Cuts Flights to France Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Royal Air Maroc's Strategic Cutback in Flight Operations

In a significant move reflecting the current challenges in the aviation industry, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has announced the immediate cancellation of nearly all its major flight routes connecting Morocco to France. This decision comes in response to the unprecedented and continuous rise in air fuel prices, which has critically jeopardized the financial viability of traditional carriers. The airline will be halting its services between Marrakech, a key tourist destination, and major French cities including Lyon, Bordeaux, and Marseille. Furthermore, flights from its Casablanca hub to various destinations in Africa's Gulf region, extending to Nigeria, have also been suspended.

This operational choice represents a substantial setback for the local economy, particularly since these French cities have historically viewed Marrakech as a premier vacation spot, generating significant passenger traffic throughout the year. The repercussions of this decision are expected to resonate deeply within the tourism sector, which relies heavily on these routes for international visitors.

Moreover, it's important to note that these crucial routes were already experiencing intense competition from low-cost European airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet, which have considerably diminished RAM's market share. The situation is further complicated by the airline's decision to also cancel its routes from Tangier to Malaga and Barcelona, as well as its direct service from Marrakech to Brussels.

Beyond Europe, RAM is concurrently dismantling its sub-Saharan network, suspending all regional connectivity flights from Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca to major capitals and hubs such as Bangui, Brazzaville, Kinshasa, Douala, Yaoundé, and Libreville. This drastic reduction in services not only reflects the immediate pressures faced by the airline but also raises questions about the future of international travel from Morocco, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges in the aviation sector.
