Residents of Al-Hosna 1 and Saada 6 in Marrakech Struggle with Sewer Odors

The residents of Al-Hosna 1 and Saada 6 neighborhoods in the Mohammadi area of Marrakech are enduring a continuous daily struggle due to the foul odors emanating from the sewage network. This situation is described by the community as a "unjustified neglect" on the part of the regional multi-service company, despite numerous complaints and correspondence sent to them over the past seven months, copies of which are available to the newspaper.

According to several affected individuals, the issue stems from the collapse and breakage of a section of the sewage pipes in front of the Abou Tamam educational institution. This has led to the leakage of wastewater, resulting in suffocating odors that permeate the vicinity of homes, the educational facility, and the nearby taxi station, posing a genuine threat to the health of both residents and students.

Residents have confirmed that the situation has worsened with the formation of a pit beside the sidewalk due to the sewage pipe collapse, endangering the safety of pedestrians and students, especially during peak school hours. They also pointed out that many families are suffering from recurrent respiratory issues and the proliferation of diseases, particularly among children, the elderly, and those suffering from asthma and allergies, especially amid rising temperatures.

The damage does not stop there; it has also extended to homes that are subject to recurrent flooding from wastewater during every rainfall, in addition to the choking of sewage pipes within several residences. This exacerbates the suffering of residents and multiplies the material and moral losses they endure.

Despite technicians from the regional multi-service company having inspected the issue on multiple occasions, according to resident statements, the interventions have remained limited and have not adequately addressed the underlying problems.

Sources indicate that the company has resorted to temporary and makeshift solutions, which involve almost daily emptying of the sewer using a pump, and redirecting the wastewater through a hose to a nearby drain, without undertaking the necessary work to permanently repair the dilapidated network.

The community believes that these measures have only postponed the escalation of the crisis, while the root causes of the problem remain unresolved, amidst growing fears regarding the deterioration of the environmental and health conditions in the area.

In light of the ongoing suffering and the absence of any practical solution despite repeated promises, the residents have issued an urgent appeal to the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, in their capacity as the head of the board of directors of the regional multi-service company, for immediate intervention to alleviate the distress and put an end to the discontent that has overshadowed the neighborhood for months. They are also demanding an investigation into the reasons behind the delay in addressing this file, which directly impacts the health and safety of citizens.

The residents are questioning the true reasons behind the persistence of this situation for over seven months, despite repeated complaints and field inspections, asserting that relying solely on makeshift solutions is no longer acceptable given the magnitude of the health and environmental damages that now threaten the quality of life in the area.
