Rabat at the Heart of African Maritime Cooperation
From July 20 to July 24, 2026, Rabat will serve as the host city for the African Maritime Forces Summit, a pivotal gathering focused on maritime security, regional cooperation, and technological advancements. This prestigious event, organized by the Royal Navy of Morocco in collaboration with several U.S. military commands, will convene both civilian and military leaders from across Africa alongside numerous international partners. The summit aims to foster dialogue and collaboration to enhance maritime security across African waters.
A Strategic Forum on Maritime Security
Initiated under the High Instructions of King Mohammed VI, the Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, this summit is designed to facilitate exchanges between African officials and their international counterparts. The Royal Navy, partnering with the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, as well as the U.S. Marine Corps Command for the same regions, has structured the event around three main priorities: maritime security, strengthening regional cooperation, and technological innovation. The overarching goal is to bolster coordination against maritime threats, enhance surveillance mechanisms, and develop unified responses to risks affecting Africa's maritime domains.
The summit's scope extends beyond African delegations, gathering representatives from Morocco, the United States, and various European, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Latin American nations. Notable participants include officials from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, South Korea, Singapore, and Turkey. The opening ceremony will be co-chaired by high-ranking Moroccan and American officials, including Rear Admiral Mohamed Tahin, Inspector of the Royal Navy, and Admiral George Wikoff, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Africa.
The agenda includes several conferences led by experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Navy, with discussions centering on the Atlantic Royal Initiative. This initiative aims to enhance the economic and strategic integration of African nations bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Participants will also explore cooperation in hydrography, oceanography, and maritime cartography, alongside the evolution of international standards. Critical issues on the agenda include coordinating search and rescue operations at sea, enhancing maritime domain awareness, and improving surveillance capabilities.
Complementing the summit, an exhibition dedicated to maritime security will showcase various Moroccan institutions, including the Royal Navy, the Royal Gendarmerie, the National Ports Agency, and the National Maritime Coordination and Rescue Center. Port complexes such as Tanger Med, Nador West Med, and Dakhla Atlantique will also present their infrastructure and capabilities. This exhibition highlights Morocco's growing role as a regional player in maritime security and as a cooperative platform between Africa and its international partners.
