Protest Against Mass Killings of Street Dogs in Morocco During FIFA Training Camp

In Herzogenaurach, approximately 200 demonstrators gathered today alongside VETO Animal Protection to protest the planned mass killings of street dogs in Morocco. This event coincided with a training session of the German national football team and aimed to address the FIFA and its sponsors regarding this critical issue.

Under the banner "No Murder for Football," the protesters raised awareness about the impending mass slaughter of around three million street dogs in Morocco, an act that forms part of the preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place in Morocco. Led by the animal welfare organization VETO and activist Nathan Goldblat, the demonstrators conveyed their clear message to FIFA and sponsors, including Adidas, with large letters that left no room for misunderstanding.

In a passionate speech, Leoni Feurstein from VETO Animal Protection stated, "While the world’s gaze is fixed on the World Cup in Morocco, millions of dogs are being brutally killed behind the scenes. These animals suffer in plain sight, being shot or poisoned. This is an intolerable situation that FIFA cannot ignore." The organization is calling for an immediate halt to these barbaric practices from FIFA and its partners.

A VETO team member currently in Morocco described the situation as extremely distressing. "The suffering of the animals occurs right before the eyes of the public," she reported. She recounted seeing dogs with open wounds, severe illnesses, and visible injuries, suffering and dying on the streets while the daily lives of people continue uninterrupted. The images of these suffering animals have become commonplace, and it appears that people are increasingly desensitized to the plight around them.

Since 2016, VETO Animal Protection has been dedicated to improving the living conditions of homeless animals in Europe and beyond. Through education, networking, and fundraising, the organization promotes animal welfare projects and provides direct assistance to affected animals. With today’s protest, they aim not only to highlight the plight of street dogs in Morocco but also to urge all World Cup sponsors to take responsibility and advocate against the mass killings.
