Portugal and Morocco Seek European Funding for Electricity Interconnection

Strengthening Energy Ties Between Portugal and Morocco

In light of increasing electricity demand and the growth of renewable energy sources, Europe is actively seeking to enhance its interconnection infrastructure with North Africa. This initiative has emerged as a vital strategy for securing energy networks and expediting the transition to sustainable energy systems. Morocco stands out as the only African nation connected to the European electricity grid, thereby reinforcing its pivotal role in cross-border electricity exchanges. Following a significant power outage that affected the Iberian Peninsula in 2025, interest has surged in the proposed interconnection project between Portugal and Morocco.

European Support and Investment Opportunities

On July 20, 2026, in Lisbon, Energy Ministers from Portugal and Morocco convened to discuss the future of this interconnection project. They are now seeking the endorsement of the European Commission, aiming to classify this initiative as a Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). Achieving this status is crucial because it would simplify access to EU funding and attract private investors, thereby facilitating the development of this energy link. By enhancing interconnections, both Portugal and Morocco can not only address their respective energy needs but also contribute to the broader goals of energy security and sustainability within Europe.
