Moroccan Civil Groups React to Disturbing Video
Morocco is currently experiencing a wave of outrage following the circulation of a shocking video on social media. In this clip, an Emirati man encourages Gulf men to marry young girls as young as 14 years old, sparking immediate backlash from women's rights organizations. These groups have condemned the video as an explicit incitement to child exploitation and human trafficking. In response to the gravity of the situation, one organization has taken legal action, urging the prosecution to initiate an immediate investigation into this matter.
The controversy erupted after the Emirati man appeared on camera, making alarming statements about the supposed benefits of marrying young girls, which he claimed would lead to better health outcomes for older men. His remarks were met with outrage from many, including local businesswoman Maria, who operates a café in Casablanca. Maria expressed her anger, stating, "This is beyond shocking; it makes me boil inside. This man is not just misguided; he embodies a macho mentality that seeks to satisfy his urges at the expense of young girls' lives. No girl of 14 is ready for marriage; she should be focused on her education and enjoying her childhood."
Calls for Legal Reform and Social Change
In the aftermath of the video's release, the individual responsible has reportedly been sentenced to three years in prison in his home country. Many Moroccans, like Redouane, who was encountered at a café terrace, are demanding harsher penalties for such actions, insisting that parents who condone such marriages should also face legal consequences. Redouane emphasized that marriage should only be considered for those who are over 18 and express a genuine desire to marry.
This incident has occurred concurrently with the drafting of a new family code in Morocco, which, in its preliminary form revealed to the public in December 2024, maintains the legal marriage age at 18. However, it still allows for exceptions with judicial approval for minors aged 17. Activists from the collective "Dounia" are advocating for a complete ban on child marriage, highlighting that the video has brought this critical issue back into the spotlight. Amal El Amine, the coordinator for Dounia, stated, "While revising the family code and eliminating exceptions for minor marriages are essential steps, they are not sufficient on their own. We need comprehensive public policies that protect children, keep girls in school, and support families in fighting poverty and insecurity."
El Amine concluded with a strong message about the need for societal change, asserting that eliminating child marriage in Morocco requires not only legal reform but also a fundamental shift in societal attitudes. In 2024 alone, nearly 9,000 marriage requests involving minors were documented, underscoring the urgency of this issue.
