Notion's Strategic Acquisition of ZeroEntropy
In a significant development within the tech landscape, Notion has officially acquired ZeroEntropy, an innovative startup specializing in AI search infrastructure, co-founded by the talented Moroccan engineer Ghita Houir Alami. This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for both companies, as the entire team from ZeroEntropy will be integrated into Notion, with Houir Alami stepping into the role of leading the Model Research team. This acquisition is not entirely unexpected, as it follows a successful commercial relationship that began when Notion became a customer of ZeroEntropy. Notably, Notion AI has been utilizing ZeroEntropy's reranking model, zerank-2, for the past two months, replacing models from larger and more established competitors. This deployment has reportedly resulted in an impressive 85% reduction in latency during the reranking process, all while maintaining high-quality results.
Open-Sourcing and Future Directions
As part of the acquisition agreement, ZeroEntropy has committed to open-sourcing all of its models under the Apache 2.0 license on Hugging Face. This decision empowers existing users to access and utilize these models through any inference provider without the need for a commercial license. However, ZeroEntropy's own products, including the zsearch search engine, will continue to be supported until September 4, after which they will be phased out. New sign-ups have already been disabled, and customers are being directed to a migration guide to facilitate the transition.
Founded in 2024 by Houir Alami and CTO Nicholas Pipitone, ZeroEntropy emerged from Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, focusing on developer-centric retrieval infrastructure. The startup developed an API capable of handling critical functions such as ingestion, indexing, reranking, and evaluation, which are essential for retrieval-augmented generation and AI agents. The core philosophy of ZeroEntropy was to challenge the notion that advanced AI models are necessary for every step in AI pipelines, advocating instead for the use of smaller, task-specific models that can operate more efficiently.
In July 2025, ZeroEntropy successfully raised $4.2 million in seed funding, led by Initialized Capital, with participation from Y Combinator, Transpose Platform, 22 Ventures, and a16z Scout, as well as contributions from angel investors affiliated with OpenAI, Hugging Face, and Front. Within its first six months, the startup processed nearly 100 million documents and handled one million queries, demonstrating its robust capabilities and market potential.
Ghita Houir Alami, who grew up in Rabat, Morocco, pursued her education at École Polytechnique in France, earning both a BS and MS in applied mathematics before completing a master's degree at UC Berkeley. Meanwhile, Nicholas Pipitone, who left Carnegie Mellon University, brought extensive experience to ZeroEntropy, having held positions as CTO or lead developer at five early-stage startups prior to this venture.
This acquisition represents the second significant exit for a developer infrastructure startup founded in the MENA region within a short span, following the recent absorption of the Egyptian-founded DevOps agent company Stakpak into Vercel. Both companies have raised institutional funding only in the past 18 months, highlighting the growing momentum and potential of the tech ecosystem in the MENA region.
