Accelerating Water Connection Project in Morocco
The construction work on the vital water connection project between the seawater desalination plant in Safi and the city of Marrakech is rapidly progressing, as it approaches its operational phase. This initiative is part of a strategic vision aimed at enhancing water security in the Red City, ensuring a stable and sustainable supply of potable water amid increasing demand and recurring drought years.
This project stands out as one of Morocco's most significant modern water initiatives, focusing on transporting desalinated water from the Safi plant to the greater Marrakech area. It represents a new approach to water resource management, redistributing surplus water from producing regions to areas facing structural shortages, thereby promoting equity in water distribution across regions.
Overseen by the regional multi-service company Marrakech-Safi, the project is expected to commence operations by the end of July. This will significantly bolster the water supply for Marrakech, accommodating the growing needs associated with demographic expansion and the rising demands from both tourism and economic activities.
The project is designed to transport a water flow of approximately 3.2 cubic meters per second, translating to nearly 100 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually through a steel pipeline stretching 185.3 kilometers. This pipeline directly links the desalination plant in Safi to large reservoirs dedicated to water distribution within Marrakech.
In addition to the main pipeline, the water project incorporates advanced infrastructure, including three primary pumping stations and substantial storage tanks to regulate pressure. Among these facilities is the “Rermem” tank, alongside various other water structures with differing capacities, ensuring a consistent and secure flow of water to different neighborhoods in the city.
The distribution system employs cutting-edge pumping techniques and gradual pressure control, optimizing supply efficiency and ensuring continuous availability while balancing the increasing urban consumption against the available resources.
This ambitious project aligns with the Kingdom's strategic directives to strengthen water security and expand the reliance on unconventional resources, particularly seawater desalination, which is a crucial option for addressing climate change challenges and ensuring sustainable water supply across the country.
