Morocco's Commitment to Combating Transnational Crime: A Reliable Partner in Global Security

Once more, Morocco has reaffirmed its role as a reliable and critical partner on the international stage in the fight against transnational crimes and international drug trafficking. Recent operations conducted by the National Security Forces, in coordination with the General Directorate for National Territorial Surveillance, resulted in the arrest of 11 individuals in both Tangier and Marrakech. Among those apprehended, ten individuals hold dual Moroccan and French, Belgian, or Dutch nationalities, while one is a French citizen. These arrests stemmed from national and international arrest warrants issued against them.

The Moroccan authorities clarified that the arrests occurred during simultaneous security operations executed in both Marrakech and Tangier. A review of these individuals against the databases of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) revealed that ten of them are subjects of Red Notices requested by judicial authorities in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Specifically, this group includes six French citizens of Moroccan origin, who are wanted by the French judiciary for their involvement in criminal activities ranging from money laundering to membership in criminal organizations linked to drug trafficking, fraud, and scams. Additionally, three Belgian citizens of Moroccan descent are sought by Belgian authorities for their alleged involvement in international drug trafficking.

Among those detained during these high-profile security operations is a Dutch national of Moroccan descent, who is also wanted internationally under a Red Notice for suspected involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering. The operations also led to the arrest of a French citizen, who, according to the National Security database, is subject to a national arrest warrant issued by the National Judicial Police Brigade for his involvement in a money laundering case.

Mohamed El Amrani Boukhbza, a professor of international relations at Abdelmalek Essaadi University, emphasized that the quality of this security operation underscores the preparedness and effectiveness of Morocco's national security system in addressing transnational crime. Boukhbza noted in an interview with the electronic newspaper Hespress that this initiative reflects Morocco's commitment to seriously and responsibly engage with the Red Notices issued by Interpol. It highlights the severity of the crimes attributed to the arrested individuals, which include murder, drug trafficking, and money laundering—some of the most dangerous forms of organized crime necessitating advanced international security coordination.

The professor further stressed that the operation demonstrates the success of Morocco's proactive security approach, which focuses on identifying potential threats and intervening early to thwart criminal activities before they occur or to mitigate their impacts. This approach has proven effective in numerous cases where Moroccan security forces have successfully apprehended fugitives and dismantled dangerous criminal networks.

Boukhbza pointed out that the results achieved illustrate Morocco's esteemed position within the international security system as a reliable partner and key player in the fight against organized crime and terrorism. He noted that Morocco plays significant roles within international security bodies and consistently hosts specialized meetings and conferences that enhance security cooperation among various nations.

Additionally, Boukhbza remarked that the mentioned operation sends a clear message indicating that Morocco is "not a safe haven for criminals or those sought by justice, and that its security forces are capable of tracking and apprehending them in coordination with international partners and bringing them before the competent judicial authorities." He emphasized Morocco's commitment to actively contributing to dismantling international criminal networks, as evidenced by its pivotal role in numerous large-scale security operations that have led to tangible results in combating organized crime.

International relations expert Khalid Chiat noted that the operation reflects Morocco's security approach in dealing with various individuals entering its territory, aimed at detecting and neutralizing any potential threats that may affect the kingdom's internal security, whether concerning public or private security, including terrorist threats and other forms of serious crime. Chiat stated in an interview with Hespress that the preventive and proactive approach has become a hallmark of Moroccan security agencies, thereby enhancing the country’s resilience and capacity to confront evolving security risks.

He added that the operation also demonstrates the robustness of cooperation between Morocco and Interpol; the collaboration is not limited to swift and effective responses to international arrest warrants but extends to identifying potential connections and networks of the wanted individuals at the national level. This reflects a high level of coordination and understanding between the kingdom and this international security body.

Chiat explained that this coordination confirms Morocco's position as a key partner in global efforts to combat various forms of transnational crime, a role also illustrated by its hosting and organization of numerous international security conferences and events, including those related to Interpol. Furthermore, he noted that ongoing security vigilance reflects Morocco's deep awareness of the rapid transformations occurring in international crime, including the expansion of criminal networks across borders and the evolving means and techniques employed by criminals, especially given the increasing use of modern technology for new criminal purposes.

He emphasized that Moroccan security has demonstrated significant capability in adapting to these changes through the development of monitoring, analysis, and intervention mechanisms, ensuring an effective response to organized and transnational crime. Chiat reinforced that Morocco continues its intensive efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, both domestically and through international cooperation, underscoring that these efforts have solidified its reputation as a "reliable security partner" respected by various security agencies worldwide, as well as by specialized international bodies, particularly Interpol. This further enhances Morocco's status as a key player in the realm of security and stability at both regional and international levels.
