Morocco's Annual Inflation Rises by 0.9% in March Amidst Energy Price Surge

Morocco's Inflation Insights for March 2026

On April 22, 2026, Moroccan authorities announced a significant annual inflation increase of 0.9% for March, driven primarily by a notable rise in energy prices. The High Commission for Planning, Morocco's official statistics body, detailed that food prices increased by 0.6%, while non-food items rose by 1.1%. The most pronounced surge occurred in energy prices, which soared by an impressive 10.7%. Additionally, the monthly inflation rate saw a rise of 1.2% in March compared to February.

The global landscape is witnessing intensified efforts from various nations to mitigate the economic repercussions stemming from the ongoing American-Israeli conflict that began on February 28. A ceasefire was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 8, which has been extended indefinitely. This conflict has contributed to rising oil and natural gas prices, exacerbated by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and uncertainties surrounding negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Reports indicate that Iran's delegation is refraining from negotiations until the U.S. Navy lifts its maritime blockade on Iranian ports. Following the U.S. blockade imposed on April 13, Tehran responded by announcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route through which 20% of global oil exports passed prior to the conflict.
