Morocco's Ambitious Water Management Strategy: 42 New Dams by 2050

Morocco's Vision for Water Resource Management

Morocco has embarked on an ambitious plan to construct 42 hydraulic dams by the year 2050, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s water resources and addressing the challenges posed by recurrent droughts. Since 2021, the nation has successfully completed eight dams, including notable structures such as M'dez in Sefrou, Koudiat Borna in Sidi Kacem, Toudgha in Tinghir, and Agdez in Zagora, among others. These projects are part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Equipment and Water, which currently oversees fourteen additional dam projects in various stages of development.

Among the fourteen ongoing projects are the Beni Azimane dam in Driouch, Sidi Abbou in Taounate, and Targa Ou Madi in Guercif. These constructions are vital for improving water availability and supporting agricultural irrigation, especially in regions that are particularly vulnerable to water shortages. Furthermore, the plan involves raising the capacities of existing dams, such as the Mohammed V dam in the Eastern region and the Mokhtar Soussi dam in Taroudant, as well as reconstructing the Sakia El Hamra dam in El Aioún.

Proactive Measures for Immediate Water Needs

In a proactive approach, Morocco has initiated the early filling of reservoirs for four dams that are still under construction. This is critical for meeting the immediate needs for drinking water and irrigation. The dams being filled include Sidi Abbou in Taounate and Sakia El Hamra in Laâyoune, in addition to Aït Ziat in the Haouz region and Beni Azimane in Driouch. These measures reflect Morocco's commitment to ensuring water security for its population amidst growing environmental challenges.

In addition to these large-scale projects, Morocco is diversifying its water resources to combat the impacts of persistent droughts. This includes investing in seawater desalination and the construction of irrigation channels. The nation is also focused on smaller infrastructure projects, with plans for 155 small dams stretching from 2022 to 2027. Progress is evident, with twelve small structures already completed, 45 projects currently underway, and plans to implement an additional 30 dams by 2026, alongside 68 more under study for 2027. This comprehensive strategy underscores Morocco's dedication to sustainable water management and its determination to secure water resources for future generations.
