Morocco Unveils $700 Million Skyscraper, Signaling Global Aspirations

A Landmark Development in Casablanca

In a bold statement of its global ambitions, Morocco has inaugurated a stunning $700 million skyscraper that rises 55 stories high, making a significant addition to the historic skyline of the capital city. This architectural marvel, named after King Mohammed VI, draws inspiration from a rocket poised for launch, standing tall at an impressive 820 feet. The Mohammed VI Tower is not just a symbol of modernity; it houses a luxurious Waldorf Astoria hotel, a variety of offices, upscale shops, fine dining restaurants, and high-end apartments, thereby catering to both business and leisure demands.

The skyscraper is one of the tallest structures in Africa and is anticipated to create around 450 direct jobs alongside 3,500 indirect employment opportunities. Leila Haddaoui, the director of the development company O Tower, shared insights with reporters regarding the project's significance and its contribution to the local economy. Located in Salé, the twin city of Rabat, the tower took eight years to complete, employing over 2,500 workers from more than a dozen countries. Its prominence has already earned it a place on Morocco’s 200-dirham banknote, symbolizing its importance to the nation.

Boosting Tourism and Regional Influence

Strategically positioned near the Grand Theatre of Rabat, designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the Mohammed VI Tower offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, further enhancing its appeal. This project is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to promote tourism in Rabat and Salé, cities that have traditionally been overshadowed by other tourist hotspots. As Morocco aims to attract more visitors, especially in light of regional tensions that may divert tourists to safer destinations, the tower serves as a centerpiece of this initiative. The country, already Africa’s top tourist destination, is gearing up to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which could further bolster its tourism sector.

For its founders, the tower embodies Morocco’s increasing soft power within Africa and the Middle East. It highlights the nation’s aspirations to emerge as a leading regional influencer through ambitious development projects. However, some critics argue that while such developments flourish along Morocco's Atlantic coast, other regions remain underdeveloped. Last year, protests led by Generation Z highlighted significant concerns regarding high unemployment rates and inadequate public services, reflecting the need for a more balanced approach to development.

Spanning over 102,800 square meters (approximately 1.1 million square feet), the Mohammed VI Tower was envisioned by Othmane Benjelloun, a notable 93-year-old billionaire and owner of the Bank of Africa, which has transitioned from state ownership to a major player in the continent's financial landscape. The inspiration for the skyscraper's design is said to have originated from a spaceflight simulation experience that Benjelloun attended in 1969, prior to the Apollo 12 mission, as revealed in a statement from the tower's management team.
