Morocco Strongly Condemns Terrorist Attacks in Mali

Morocco's Staunch Opposition to Violence in Mali

On April 25, Morocco firmly denounced the recent "terrorist and separatist" attacks that transpired in multiple cities across Mali, labeling them as "cowardly and criminal" acts. These assaults were attributed to the Sahel branch of Al-Qaeda and separatist groups from northern Mali. The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its grave concern regarding these events in an official statement on its website. It extended heartfelt condolences and compassion to the victims' families and to the "brotherly Malian people." This expression of solidarity underscores Morocco's unwavering support for Mali's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its commitment to aiding Malian authorities in their ongoing battle against terrorism and separatism in the region.

Military Response and Ongoing Conflict in Mali

The General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces reported that "terrorist armed groups" attempted to launch attacks on several cities, but they faced immediate setbacks due to a robust response from the military, resulting in the "neutralization" of hundreds of assailants. The separatist group known as the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), which claims a vast area in northern Mali, and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an affiliate of Al-Qaeda, announced a coordinated offensive in the northern region. This escalation led to the capture of the strategically important city of Kidal.

However, JNIM also conducted unilateral attacks targeting civilian facilities and military barracks in Bamako and other central cities, including an assault on the international airport in Mali's capital, which forced the suspension of flights in response to the violence. The Malian military assured the public that the situation is "completely under control" and urged citizens to remain calm amidst the turmoil. Since 2020, Mali has been under military rule, grappling with instability and severe violence stemming from northern separatists and jihadist groups linked to both the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, a situation that has persisted for over a decade.
