Morocco Stands in Solidarity with Mali Amid Coordinated Attacks

Morocco's Support for Mali Following Attacks

On Saturday, Morocco expressed its unwavering solidarity with Mali following a series of coordinated attacks that struck multiple cities, including the capital Bamako, targeting both civilian and military establishments. Reports indicate that the Moroccan government is monitoring the situation with great concern, responding to the violence that erupted across various locations such as Kidal, Sévaré, and Gao. A Moroccan diplomatic source condemned these brutal assaults, extended condolences to the families of the victims, and reiterated Morocco's commitment to supporting Mali's authorities in their efforts to maintain security, stability, and territorial integrity.

The attacks, which were characterized by heavy gunfire and explosions, have been attributed to armed groups engaging in coordinated operations. Notably, the Front de Libération de l’Azawad was reported to be active in Kidal, while the Groupe de soutien à l’islam et aux musulmans, led by Iyad Ag Ghaly, was indicated to be operating in both northern regions and the capital. The violence escalated to the extent that the residence of Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati suffered significant damage during one of the assaults. In response, the Malian army reported that it was engaged with unidentified assailants and urged local residents to remain calm.

As the day progressed, the Malian army claimed to have achieved significant successes against the armed groups, announcing that several fighters had been neutralized and that equipment had been destroyed, thus asserting that the situation was under control. However, the capital of Mali remained tense, with streets largely deserted and the sound of explosions resonating, particularly around the Sénou area near the airport and the Base 101 military zone, where helicopters were observed flying overhead throughout the morning.

The African Union also responded to the situation, with Commission chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressing his concern over the attacks. He condemned the violence, underscoring the potential risks to civilians and reaffirming the African Union's commitment to the stability of Mali. Meanwhile, the United States issued a security alert, advising its citizens to avoid travel to Kati due to the ongoing unrest. By early afternoon, while there were no confirmed reports of ongoing clashes, authorities stated that they were keeping a close watch on the situation, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and security measures.
