Morocco Increases Georgian Oil Imports, Rising Among Major Buyers

Morocco's Surge in Georgian Oil Imports

Recent data from the Georgian statistics agency (Geostat) reveals that Morocco has significantly ramped up its oil imports from Georgia, spending over 20.71 million USD between January and March of this year. In contrast, Georgia's imports from Morocco during the same period were valued at just over 277,000 USD. This increasing trend underscores Morocco's growing role as a key player in the international oil market, particularly with Georgian oil derivatives, which have witnessed a remarkable surge in demand.

Market Dynamics and Economic Implications

In March alone, Georgia exported nearly 208 million USD worth of oil derivatives, surpassing its raw material and mineral exports. Morocco ranked third in the list of countries receiving these oil derivatives, with approximately 16.8 million USD in imports, lagging behind China and Turkey, which collectively imported over 46 million USD in the same month. Notably, Togo topped the list of importers, with its own imports exceeding 36 million USD in March. The growth of Georgia's oil derivative exports is striking, recording a staggering 698% increase compared to the same quarter last year. This rise is attributed to the establishment of a new oil refinery in Tbilisi, which has enabled the country to process and export oil derivatives efficiently.

Furthermore, this refinery, developed by Black Sea Petroleum, primarily produces high-sulfur diesel and gas oil, with plans to expand into gasoline and aviation fuel production. The shift in Georgia's oil production landscape follows a significant increase in crude oil shipments from Russia, which amounted to over 118 million USD in the first quarter of this year. This situation arises as the European Union currently restricts products derived from Russian oil, prompting Georgia to seek alternative sources of crude oil to sustain its burgeoning industry.

The diplomatic ties between Morocco and Georgia have been strengthening, with recent meetings between foreign ministers and the exchange of ambassadors aimed at enhancing cooperation and partnerships. Moroccan King Mohammed VI also expressed congratulations to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on the anniversary of Georgia's independence, emphasizing the mutual desire to elevate bilateral relations to new heights. Such developments reflect both countries' aspirations to solidify their political and economic alliances, especially amidst shifting geopolitical landscapes in Europe and beyond.
