Morocco Hosts High-Level Meeting of African Counter-Terrorism Agency Heads

Morocco Hosts Significant Counter-Terrorism Summit

On June 6, 2026, Morocco commenced the fifth high-level meeting of African counter-terrorism and security agency heads, in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism. This pivotal gathering is taking place over the course of two days and is set to witness participation from approximately 40 intelligence and security agencies across Africa. Additionally, around 90 delegations from the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Asia, along with representatives from various regional UN institutions, are also in attendance, according to reports from the Moroccan official news agency.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita underscored the pressing challenges that Africa currently faces, particularly highlighting the rise of terrorism and its regional implications on the continent, the escalating armed conflicts, and the increasing nexus between terrorist groups, separatist movements, and transnational crime. He stressed that stability is fundamental for fostering development and democracy, and he called for a stronger African voice in the modernization of the United Nations' counter-terrorism strategy.

The inaugural session of this high-level meeting was held in Marrakech in 2022, followed by subsequent sessions in Tangier in 2023, Fes in 2024, and Agadir in 2025. These meetings aim to enhance regional cooperation in combating terrorism across Africa, addressing the critical need for collaborative strategies in light of the growing security threats.
