Morocco Highlights Development in Western Sahara at UN Conference in Nicaragua

Morocco's diplomatic engagements within the United Nations are gaining momentum as the Caribbean regional seminar of the United Nations' Fourth Committee, known as "C-24", convenes in Managua, Nicaragua. A significant Moroccan delegation, led by Ambassador Omar Hilale, the permanent representative of Morocco to the UN, is participating in this important regional conference, which runs from May 25 to May 27. The delegation includes officials from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as elected representatives from the southern regions of Morocco, showcasing a strong Moroccan presence at the UN meeting.

This year's seminar, themed "Progress Made, Renewed Commitments, Partnerships, and Innovative Approaches," is part of the ongoing efforts of the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. The sessions of this conference focus on discussing the conditions of non-self-governing territories listed on the UN agenda. The recommendations and conclusions derived from these discussions are expected to be submitted to the upcoming thematic session of the Special Committee scheduled for June, prior to being referred to the United Nations General Assembly.

During the conference, the Moroccan delegation highlighted the dynamic development taking place in the southern regions of the kingdom. They emphasized major projects launched in recent years, particularly in infrastructure, renewable energy, blue economy, port investments, and logistical connectivity. Additionally, social programs aimed at enhancing human development indicators and improving the economic and investment appeal of the region were discussed, all under the framework of the new development model for the southern regions initiated by King Mohammed VI in 2015.

The participation of Sahrawi representatives in international forums serves as a true embodiment of the "legitimate representation" of the people of Moroccan Sahara, countering the separatist narratives propagated by the Polisario Front with the backing of Algeria. Morocco aims to underscore the economic and social transformations experienced in the southern regions and link them to the stability and development trajectory observed in the area over recent years. Furthermore, Moroccan diplomacy asserts that the autonomy initiative proposed by Rabat in 2007 is gaining increasing international support as a serious, realistic, and credible solution to the regional dispute.

Ambassador Omar Hilale's activities within the United Nations are closely monitored due to his significant roles as Morocco's permanent representative and as the chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission. Over recent years, he has spearheaded several initiatives related to peace, development, and multilateral cooperation, as Morocco seeks to enhance its presence within UN institutions and solidify its political and developmental approach regarding the Sahara issue across various international forums.

It is noteworthy that the United Nations' Fourth Committee comprises a number of countries from various continents, including China, Russia, India, Indonesia, Cuba, Venezuela, Tunisia, Syria, and Ethiopia, alongside nations from the Caribbean region. This UN body continues to hold annual regional seminars to monitor issues related to decolonization and the developments of the territories under its jurisdiction.
