Morocco Expands Hotel Capacity Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco's Ambitious Plans for the 2030 World Cup

In a significant move to prepare for the upcoming 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco is set to enhance its hospitality infrastructure by adding an impressive 60,000 hotel beds across the nation. This marks a historic first, as Morocco will co-host the tournament alongside Spain and Portugal. According to the country's tourism minister, this expansion aims to ensure seamless accommodations for the influx of visitors expected during the tournament.

Morocco's efforts come on the heels of its national team's remarkable achievement of reaching the quarter-finals in the previous World Cup, igniting a surge in interest and investment in the tourism sector. The government recognizes that a robust tourism industry not only creates thousands of job opportunities but also contributes significantly to the country's GDP, accounting for approximately seven percent.

Boosting Tourism and Infrastructure Development

Last year, Morocco welcomed nearly 20 million tourists, establishing itself as the most visited destination in Africa. With an ambitious target of attracting 26 million visitors by 2030, the Moroccan government is ramping up its efforts to enhance its appeal as a travel destination. Over the past four years, the government has already added 45,000 hotel beds, pushing the total capacity to over 300,000 beds.

In addition to expanding hotel accommodations, Morocco is investing over 190 billion dirhams (approximately RM83 billion) in critical infrastructure projects, including rail networks, roads, airports, stadiums, and urban development. This massive investment aims to create a comprehensive travel and tourism ecosystem that will attract more tourists from regions such as China, the United States, and the Middle East by establishing better flight connections.

Furthermore, the Moroccan government intends to diversify its tourism offerings, which currently rely heavily on destinations like Marrakech and Agadir. Plans are in motion to position Rabat as a cultural, sports, and business tourism hub, further enriching the country’s tourist experience.
