Morocco Enhances Rail Infrastructure with $10.3 Billion Mobility Strategy and South Korean Partnerships

Morocco's Ambitious Rail Expansion Initiatives

In a significant move towards modernizing its transportation infrastructure, Morocco's National Railways Office (ONCF) has recently signed strategic agreements with leading South Korean companies, Hyundai Rotem and KORAIL. These partnerships are designed to bolster the country’s ambitious rail expansion plans, which are part of a broader $10.3 billion mobility strategy aimed at enhancing national rail access and connectivity.

Under these agreements, Hyundai Rotem is set to deliver vital maintenance services for rolling stock over the next two decades, while KORAIL will focus on quality control, production oversight, and knowledge transfer. The financial aspect of the agreement with Hyundai Rotem is substantial, amounting to approximately 748.2 billion won, equivalent to around $487 million. This investment is crucial as Morocco embarks on a major initiative to procure 110 modern double-decker trains, which will be instrumental in improving rail services throughout the Casablanca metropolitan area.

Vision 2040: A Roadmap for Enhanced Connectivity

The introduction of these double-decker trains, capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, aligns perfectly with Morocco's 'Vision 2040'. This comprehensive strategy outlines an ambitious plan for investing 96 billion dirhams (approximately $10.3 billion) into the nation's mobility infrastructure, with nearly 20 billion dirhams earmarked specifically for developments in Casablanca. One of the flagship projects under this vision is the Casablanca South Station, which is anticipated to handle up to 12 million passengers annually, serving as a pivotal intermodal hub that will connect high-speed rail lines, regional services, a light rail network, and an express service to Mohammed V Airport.

Furthermore, the Vision 2040 plan includes the construction of two additional next-generation stations, one strategically located in Benslimane near the Grand Stade Hassan II and the other at Casablanca Airport. Ultimately, by 2040, Morocco aims to significantly increase its rail coverage, expanding from 23 to 43 cities and thereby enhancing access to the rail network from 51% to an impressive 87% of the population. The strategy also envisions connecting 12 international airports and 12 ports to the rail network, a substantial increase from the current connectivity of one airport and six ports.
