Morocco's Prestigious Election to UN ECOSOC
On June 4th, 2026, Morocco achieved a remarkable milestone by being elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term spanning from 2027 to 2029. This significant election took place during a voting session held at the UN headquarters in New York, where Morocco garnered an impressive 178 votes out of 187 cast by member states present.
This overwhelming support reflects the confidence that the international community places in Morocco's unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation, sustainable development, and international collaboration. It underscores Morocco's credibility and the diligent efforts it has made as a constructive actor engaged in promoting a diplomacy rooted in dialogue, solidarity, and mutual respect.
Morocco's Vision Under Royal Leadership
Under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues to steadfastly uphold its dedication to a renewed, effective, and inclusive multilateralism, grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter, fostering dialogue among nations, and seeking coordinated solutions to shared challenges. The Economic and Social Council, established under the UN Charter, serves as one of the six main organs of the organization, guiding and coordinating the economic, social, and cultural activities of the UN system.
ECOSOC plays a pivotal role within the multilateral framework, overseeing major conferences and summits convened by the UN. Its primary sectors include the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, humanitarian affairs, and the forum on financing for development, each contributing to the collective effort to achieve the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental.
Morocco places special importance on ECOSOC as a central body within the UN system. As the international community faces intertwined challenges, the Kingdom remains convinced of the Council's fundamental role in enhancing the coherence of the UN development system and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
With its robust national experience and regional and international commitment, Morocco aims to actively contribute to strengthening the Council's role as a key platform for coordination among stakeholders: member states, international institutions, the private sector, civil society, and academic circles. During its term, Morocco will continue to engage actively in the Council's work and its subsidiary bodies, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, reform of the UN development system, financing for development, and South-South and triangular cooperation.
Guided by its adherence to the values of solidarity, dialogue, and shared responsibility, Morocco intends to make the United Nations Economic and Social Council a more effective and inclusive platform for addressing the priorities of developing countries.
