Moroccan Gas Distributors Announce 48-Hour Protest Amid Profit Margin Crisis

Moroccan Gas Distributors Halt Operations Due to Profit Margin Crisis

The Professional Association of Wholesale Liquid Gas Distributors in Morocco has declared a temporary suspension of gas distribution for 48 hours on April 21 and 22, 2026. This significant action is a protest against what the association characterizes as the authorities' indifference towards their urgent requests and the persistent lack of solutions to a profit margin crisis that threatens the viability of this crucial sector. Association President Mohamed Benjelloun has raised alarms, indicating that without a constructive response from the government, this suspension could potentially be prolonged.

In a statement to Yabiladi, Benjelloun expressed frustration over the deteriorating conditions within the gas distribution sector, emphasizing that professionals have not received any substantial feedback from either the government or major companies despite the escalating challenges they face. He highlighted the dramatic increase in operational costs in recent years, particularly concerning wages, transportation, and essential supplies, while lamenting that the profit margin has not seen any adjustment since 2016.

Challenges Amplified by Global Events

Benjelloun further elaborated that the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have intensified the crisis, resulting in continuous price increases that have rendered the situation untenable for professionals in the field. The sustained rise in costs for transportation, maintenance, and wages, coupled with successive hikes in gas prices, has significantly disrupted the balance within this industry.

The announcement of a distribution halt is not a decision made lightly; it follows repeated attempts at dialogue with the relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Ministry of the Interior, where the association has sent more than 20 communications. Regrettably, these efforts have only yielded promises devoid of any concrete actions, leaving distributors in a precarious situation.

While the planned cessation of operations is set for 48 hours, Benjelloun has indicated that the association may extend this suspension if their concerns continue to be ignored. However, he reassured citizens that warehouse doors will remain open to provide available resources during this period. He reiterated the importance of dialogue and expressed hope for a serious response from authorities that balances the needs of both the public and the professionals in the industry. He cautioned that if the current circumstances do not improve, a prolonged suspension of gas distribution could become a reality.
