Fouzi Lekjaa Discusses the Recruitment of Lamine Yamal
In a recent podcast appearance, Fouzi Lekjaa, the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), shed light on the concerted efforts made by Moroccan football authorities to persuade the talented young player Lamine Yamal to represent the Atlas Lions. Lekjaa revealed that these efforts included direct engagement with the then-coach of the national team, Walid Regragui, as well as ongoing communication with Yamal prior to his decision to play for Spain. He emphasized that Morocco’s approach to Yamal was characterized by transparency and respect, noting that the player is eligible to represent Morocco through his father.
“Let me speak to you frankly and clearly. As for Lamine Yamal, we contacted him, and he is Moroccan through his father,” Lekjaa stated, reflecting the federation's commitment to nurturing talent that aligns with its national identity. The FRMF's outreach efforts extended to arranging a meeting between Yamal and Regragui in the crucial moments leading up to the player's decision, underscoring their proactive strategy in engaging potential players.
Respecting Player Choices and Emphasizing Community
Lekjaa elaborated on Yamal’s connections within the Moroccan football community, mentioning that the young forward was already acquainted with several Moroccan players, including Abde Ezzalzouli, a fellow FC Barcelona youth academy product. This connection, according to Lekjaa, was significant as it illustrated the familial bonds within the sport. “More than that, he had a Moroccan friend playing in Morocco, Abde Ezzalzouli, who was with him at Barcelona; they played in the same youth category and progressed through the same ranks together,” he noted, highlighting the importance of these relationships in the recruitment process.
Despite Morocco's vigorous pursuit of Yamal, Lekjaa made it clear that the federation fully respects the player's ultimate decision to represent Spain, reinforcing their stance on how they engage with players of dual nationality. “We respect their decision. We do not question it,” Lekjaa affirmed, reinforcing the notion that the FRMF is committed to maintaining a respectful and supportive environment for all players. He expressed that Morocco continues to view Yamal as an integral part of its national community, wishing him success in his football career. “More importantly, we always wish him well because we consider him Moroccan through his father,” he added.
Lekjaa also dismissed allegations that the federation exerts pressure on players regarding their national team choices, using Yamal's situation as a case study to highlight the FRMF’s respect for personal convictions. “The point I have just mentioned shows and disproves everything that may be said about us enticing or pressuring this player or that player,” he asserted, emphasizing that the decision ultimately rests with the players. Yamal’s choice to represent Spain in 2023 has made him one of the country’s most promising young talents, and his journey continues to attract attention within the football community.
