Moroccan Football Fans Face Visa Challenges Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Frustration Among Moroccan Supporters Over US Visa Denials

A significant number of Moroccan football fans are expressing their discontent after facing visa rejections for their planned travel to the United States for the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup. This situation has ignited concern among supporters who are eager to witness the Atlas Lions take to the field, as many insist they followed all the necessary protocols yet still found themselves unable to obtain the required travel authorizations.

Azzedine Al Attraoui, the president of the Moroccan National Team Supporters Association, has made a heartfelt appeal to FIFA, urging the organization to intervene and assist the fans who have been adversely affected by this situation. Al Attraoui highlighted that numerous supporters had invested in official World Cup ticket packages and diligently submitted all necessary documentation prior to their visa applications, only to be met with disappointment. "Many Moroccan fans have applied for US visas to go cheer on the Atlas Lions, but many have had their visa applications denied," he stated in an interview with Al Jazeera.

He elaborated on the financial commitment made by these fans, noting that ticket packages ranged from $500 to $1,500, in addition to the costs associated with visa applications. "They attended the embassy and paid the requisite fees, only to be taken aback by the visa denials. The reasons behind these decisions remain unclear," he explained. Al Attraoui himself is among over 40 supporters who submitted visa applications, all hoping to attend the tournament. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "We are demanding FIFA and its president, who oversee fan engagement and the World Cup, to take action, as many Moroccan fans are eager to attend and cannot afford to miss this opportunity due to their responsibilities at home, including children and jobs."

Wider Implications of Visa Controversies

The visa denials have drawn heightened scrutiny toward the US Embassy in Rabat, prompting critics to question the rationale behind the refusals, particularly in relation to the World Cup. The controversy escalated when it was revealed that Moroccan international Zakaria El Ouahdi initially faced a visa denial despite being officially named in the 26-man squad for the tournament. Reports suggest that factors unrelated to El Ouahdi's football capabilities may have influenced the decision; for instance, a source cited by Morocco World News indicated that aspects of his family's appearance, including the beard of his father, were scrutinized during the visa application process. Fortunately, the issue was eventually rectified following intervention by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which led to the approval of El Ouahdi's visa.

While the visa issue continues to stir discussions among supporters, the Moroccan national team is steadfastly focused on their preparations for the World Cup. The Atlas Lions arrived in the United States earlier this week and are scheduled to face Norway in their final friendly match before the tournament commences. Morocco is set to launch its World Cup campaign against Brazil on June 13, with subsequent matches against Scotland and Haiti in Group C, as the North African team aims to make a significant mark on the global stage.
