Medical Malpractice and Public Health Concerns in Morocco: A Call for Action

Medical Malpractice Case in Marrakech

The latest insights from the Moroccan newspaper "Al-Masaa" reveal a significant ruling by the Marrakech Court of First Instance, which held a private clinic fully accountable for a medical malpractice case involving incorrect diagnosis. The court awarded a total compensation of 500,000 dirhams to the affected patient, placing the burden of payment on the insurance company while allowing it to substitute for the clinic in fulfilling the judgment.

The case details emerge from the experience of a lawyer who represented a client suffering from severe abdominal pain and a high fever. The clinic erroneously diagnosed her condition as acute cholecystitis, suggesting immediate surgical intervention. However, dissatisfied with the diagnosis, the patient chose to leave the clinic against medical advice and sought treatment at another facility. There, medical examinations revealed no signs of gallbladder inflammation; instead, she was diagnosed with malaria, necessitating urgent admission to the intensive care unit to save her life.

Challenges of Mosquito Infestation and Water Scarcity

In another report, "Al-Masaa" highlighted a growing concern in the Bouarfa neighborhood of Nador province, where residents have called on local authorities and the municipal council to intervene urgently to combat a widespread mosquito infestation that has become increasingly alarming in recent days. Numerous citizens have complained about an unprecedented increase in mosquito activity, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours, significantly affecting the comfort of families and exacerbating the distress of residents within their homes.

This situation has led the community to demand immediate spraying and disinfection campaigns targeting various breeding grounds for mosquitoes, especially near water channels, green spaces, and areas prone to stagnant water, which are the primary environments for mosquito reproduction.

Additionally, the newspaper has reported on Morocco's strategic plans to tackle water scarcity through seawater desalination. Currently, 17 operational plants produce between 320 and 420 million cubic meters of potable and irrigation water annually. The government plans to establish 13 new desalination facilities by 2030, aiming to increase the total capacity to 1.7 billion cubic meters per year. This ambitious initiative has been supported by a framework agreement signed in April of the previous year to develop a comprehensive national industrial chain in the field of seawater desalination.

Moreover, "Bayane Al-Youm" addressed the issue of access fees for the swimming pool at the recreational sports complex in Sidi Ridhwan, set at 40 dirhams per individual. This has reignited discussions on balancing the sustainability of such projects with citizens' rights to access public services that consider their social conditions. Local actors are questioning whether the community has successfully integrated a social aspect into this project from the outset or if the current debate reveals a lack of proactive support for a facility meant to serve all demographic groups, not just those financially able to afford access.

Furthermore, many rural areas in the Tiznit region faced near-total isolation during the Eid al-Adha holiday due to poor telephone coverage and internet services. This situation hindered residents from communicating with their families and exchanging greetings during the holiday. In light of these challenges, community voices have called for urgent intervention from telecommunications companies and relevant authorities to enhance coverage and improve network quality, ensuring that residents can access essential services equitably.
