Severe Sentencing for Assault on Law Enforcement
The Court of Appeal in Fes has concluded a significant case involving a police officer who suffered a severe injury due to an assault. The appellate court upheld the initial ruling against the accused, confirming a six-year prison sentence for the defendant, who was found guilty of causing permanent disability to the police officer during the incident in question.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court also maintained the civil aspect of the initial judgment, which mandates the accused to pay a financial compensation of 80,000 dirhams to the victim as restitution for the damages incurred due to the violent act.
Details of the Incident
The events leading to the trial date back to October of the previous year. During this period, the police officer was assaulted with a sharp weapon by the defendant, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident. This brutal attack resulted in grave injuries, leading to the amputation of several fingers on the officer's hand, which has left him with a permanent disability.
Prior to the appeal, the primary court had already sentenced the accused to six years in prison along with the aforementioned compensation. The appeal court reviewed the case and confirmed the earlier judgment in its entirety, emphasizing the serious nature of violent assaults that result in long-term disabilities, which are treated with utmost seriousness in the judicial system due to the profound physical and psychological repercussions they create for the victims.
