Mamelodi Sundowns Clinch Second African Champions League Title

Mamelodi Sundowns celebrated a remarkable achievement on May 24, 2026, as they secured their second African Champions League title by edging out FAR Rabat with a 2-1 aggregate score in the final held in Rabat, Morocco. The South African team, affectionately known as “the Brazilians” due to their vibrant yellow kits, previously triumphed in this prestigious tournament back in 2016. This victory is especially sweet for Sundowns, as they faced disappointment last year when they fell to the Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC in the final.

Entering the second leg of the final at the Moulay Abdellah stadium with a narrow 1-0 lead from the first match, Sundowns found themselves under pressure when FAR Rabat equalized shortly before halftime. The Moroccan side's Mohamed Hrimat converted a penalty kick after being fouled by Sundowns defender Divine Lunga, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1. However, Sundowns quickly regained their composure and struck back with a goal from Teboho Mokoena, whose shot bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into the net just before the halftime whistle blew, putting Sundowns back in front on aggregate.

The second half saw more drama when FAR Rabat was awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was penalized for a foul on Youssef El Fahli. In a moment of redemption, Williams managed to save Hrimat’s penalty attempt, preserving Sundowns' lead and solidifying their path to victory. With this triumph, Mamelodi Sundowns adds another prestigious title to their illustrious history, while FAR Rabat, who previously won the Champions League in 1985, will have to regroup for future challenges.
