Lufthansa's Strategic Expansion in Morocco
The German airline group Lufthansa has announced a significant expansion of its winter program for 2026-2027, with Morocco being one of the markets set to benefit from new routes through its subsidiary Discover Airlines, despite the ongoing jet fuel crisis. Notably, Agadir will be connected to Frankfurt, while Fès will enjoy the distinction of having the "only direct flight between Munich and the imperial city of Fès." This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes the extension of the Allegris cabins to numerous intercontinental destinations. The airline emphasizes that this new interior configuration features "an innovative seat concept, the highest quality materials, and advanced technologies designed to provide a personalized experience across all travel classes."
Morocco's inclusion in the airline's winter program marks a pivotal development, starting with the launch of a route between Frankfurt and Agadir, operated by Discover Airlines. The airline will also serve Fès from Munich, providing German travelers with direct access to one of the Kingdom's major historical cities.
New Long-Haul Destinations and Enhanced Services
These announcements coincide with the expansion of the Allegris product to eleven new long-haul destinations. From Frankfurt, aircraft equipped with this configuration will serve cities including Vancouver, Houston, Denver, Atlanta, Detroit, San José in Costa Rica, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian capital will be linked to Germany five times a week starting October 25, utilizing the state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9, which features 287 seats distributed across three classes.
Additionally, from Munich, the Allegris offering will be introduced on routes to Singapore, Washington, and Cape Town, with several transatlantic routes increasing their frequency, specifically to Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Lagos, São Paulo, Mexico City, and Johannesburg.
The winter expansion also affects the other airlines within the group. Swiss International Air Lines will add Bangalore to its network and launch its new long-haul product "SWISS Senses" to Johannesburg and Shanghai aboard the Airbus A350. Meanwhile, ITA Airways from Italy will initiate a seasonal direct route between Rome-Fiumicino and Santo Domingo and will extend its recently opened routes to Houston and London Heathrow throughout the winter.
Brussels Airlines will maintain its route between Brussels and Kilimanjaro during the winter season to cater to robust demand. Edelweiss will increase its capacity to several Scandinavian destinations and extend its operations to Luleå in Swedish Lapland. Eurowings will enhance its "Capital Express" program by adding new routes to Rome and London and expanding its offerings from Berlin to various destinations in Finnish Lapland.
In parallel to this network reorganization, Lufthansa is preparing for a gradual resumption of its operations in Israel. Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo are set to resume flights to Tel Aviv starting June 2, 2026. Lufthansa and SWISS are expected to follow suit on July 1, 2026, with Eurowings starting in mid-July. Brussels Airlines, however, has extended the suspension of its flights to Israel until October 24, 2026.
