LaLiga's Javier Tebas Enthusiastically Welcomes Potential Matches in Morocco

LaLiga's Vision Expands to Morocco

Javier Tebas, the President of LaLiga, has expressed his enthusiastic support for the idea of hosting Spanish league matches in Morocco, highlighting the immense popularity that Spanish football enjoys within the kingdom. In a recent interview with the Moroccan News Agency, Tebas emphasized the significant number of passionate Moroccan fans following LaLiga, suggesting that the possibility of staging matches there is not only logical but also feasible. He stated, "Considering the vast audience that follows the Spanish league in Morocco, I believe playing there would be quite manageable, especially since the logistical constraints involved in travel are minimal. We could consider hosting a match in the new Casablanca stadium... why not?" This statement underlines the potential for LaLiga to further expand its presence in the region, tapping into an enthusiastic fanbase.

Strengthening Ties and Collaboration

In this context, Tebas highlighted the importance of the memorandum of understanding signed between LaLiga and the Moroccan National Professional Football League, which aims to build coordination channels and enhance cooperation in a manner that benefits football in both countries. He asserted that Morocco is a cornerstone of LaLiga's international expansion strategy, emphasizing the deep historical, cultural, and sporting ties that connect Spain and Morocco, which he believes is a crucial factor in the global growth of the Spanish league. Tebas pointed out that the Middle East and North Africa represent a strategic market for LaLiga, given the fervent passion exhibited by fans in the region, and he underscored Morocco's distinguished position within this landscape.

Tebas remarked that the historical relationship with Morocco extends into the realm of football as well, noting that the sporting ties between the two nations have always been strong. He referred to the "bonds of unity and mutual understanding between Spain and Morocco, particularly in sports and football," while emphasizing that Moroccan fans' enthusiasm for Spanish football serves as a significant competitive advantage for LaLiga in relation to other global tournaments, including the English Premier League. He suggested that the following LaLiga enjoys in this region could provide it with an edge over its English counterpart, attributing this advantage to geographical proximity, shared history, and the recent successes of Moroccan football, which he described as "structural and deserved." Moreover, Tebas connected LaLiga's current international positioning with the profound economic transformation that the league has undergone over the past decade. Reflecting on a challenging context from around thirteen years ago, he recounted, "We had debts amounting to approximately 750 million euros owed to the Spanish government, about 100 million euros to players, and between 80 to 90 million euros in social security obligations. Additionally, there was significant debt among clubs." However, he noted that the situation has drastically changed today and confirmed that all debts have been fully resolved. This improvement, according to Tebas, is based on a robust economic regulatory framework that distinguishes LaLiga from other European leagues, stating, "We dictate what clubs can spend, whereas other leagues only impose penalties after violations occur." According to Tebas, LaLiga's financial stability has enabled the launch of strategic projects, such as the agreement with CVC Capital Partners, which invested nearly two billion euros for 8.5% of audiovisual rights revenues over a 50-year period. He mentioned that 75% of this investment is allocated to infrastructure, technology, and the international expansion of the league. He concluded that the results of this vibrant growth are reflected in record levels of fan engagement, increased match day revenues, and steady commercial growth. On the topic of player development, Tebas praised LaLiga's model, which encourages investment in training centers, noting that 20% of first division players are graduates from the clubs' training academies.
