LaLiga Considers Hosting Matches in Morocco to Expand its Reach

LaLiga's Ambitious Plans for International Expansion

The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, has recently opened the door to the possibility of hosting Spanish league matches in Morocco, emphasizing the significance of expanding the tournament's footprint in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. In a revealing interview aired on Thursday by the Moroccan news agency MAP, Tebas stated, "We could consider a match in the new stadium in Casablanca. Why not?" This stadium, currently being constructed in Morocco's economic capital for the upcoming 2030 World Cup, is set to be the largest in the world, boasting a capacity of 115,000 spectators.

Tebas highlighted the fervent following LaLiga enjoys in Morocco, suggesting that organizing matches there would be logistically simpler due to minimal travel challenges. "Considering the number of fans who support the Spanish league in Morocco, I believe it would be easier to play there," he remarked, indicating a strategic move that could significantly enhance LaLiga's visibility and engagement in the region.

The Growing Passion for LaLiga in MENA

Moreover, Tebas pointed out that the expansion of LaLiga in MENA represents a crucial factor for the league's future, noting that the enthusiasm for Spanish football in this region surpasses even that for the English Premier League. "We are witnessing incredible passion for LaLiga throughout the region, from Iraq to Morocco. Particularly with Morocco, there are historical ties that are also reflected in the world of football," he added, underlining the cultural connections that could facilitate a successful integration of Spanish football into Moroccan society.

In June of the previous year, LaLiga and the Moroccan National Professional Football League (LNFP) signed a partnership agreement aimed at sharing Spanish expertise to enhance the management and competitiveness of Moroccan football. Morocco, alongside Spain and Portugal, is one of the hosts for the 2030 World Cup, further solidifying its role in the global football arena. This recent statement from Tebas follows earlier attempts to play Spanish matches abroad, including a proposed Barcelona vs. Villarreal match in Miami, which was ultimately rejected. Tebas had called that decision a "missed opportunity," indicating his ongoing commitment to exploring international venues for LaLiga matches.
