Judicial Authority Closes Borders for Officials Following Building Collapse in Fez

Crackdown on Local Officials Following Tragic Incident

In a decisive move, the Public Prosecutor at the Fez Appeals Court has ordered the closure of borders for several local officials, suspected of being involved in the tragic collapse of two buildings in Fez that resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals and injuries to 16 others earlier in March. This significant legal action was taken on April 17, 2026, reflecting the seriousness of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding this disaster.

The investigation, which has been ongoing, particularly targets local leaders and authorities who have been managing the urban areas of Ben Soudah and the Al-Masira neighborhood in Fez since 2006. The aim of closing the borders is to ensure that the ongoing inquiries into this catastrophic event are not hindered, allowing for a thorough examination of all involved parties.

A detailed inquiry has been scheduled for May 5, 2026, where the investigating judge will begin comprehensive interrogations with the accused parties regarding the allegations against them. A total of 21 individuals are currently facing charges in connection with this incident, among whom eight local authorities have been placed in custody at the local prison of Bou Rkaiz, while others are being monitored under conditional release.

This incident has raised serious concerns over building safety and the accountability of urban officials in Morocco, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and oversight in construction practices to prevent future tragedies.
