International Conference on 'Marrakech Map 3D' Highlights Digital Heritage Preservation

The vibrant city of Marrakech recently hosted an international conference focused on the innovative project "Marrakech Map 3D." This significant event was organized by the National School of Architecture in Marrakech, with the support of the Marrakech-Safi region and in collaboration with several esteemed national and international academic and scientific institutions.

This scientific gathering was held in partnership with the Catholic University of Leuven, the National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage, and the University of Zurich, alongside supportive organizations such as the Dar Bellarj Foundation and Axigeo. The conference aimed to enhance academic cooperation and exchange expertise in the realms of digitization and heritage preservation.

The conference program featured two main scientific sessions. The morning session was dedicated to the theme of "3D Elevation and Participatory Mapping Tools," where cutting-edge techniques in three-dimensional modeling were discussed, along with their applications in urban, architectural, and heritage contexts. This session also facilitated the sharing of experiences regarding the use of these tools for documenting spatial environments.

In the afternoon, the conference introduced the "J-EMMA" project, which aims to establish a participatory digital geographic memory for the historical medina of Marrakech. This segment opened up an extensive discussion on the future development of the platform and the involvement of various local stakeholders and institutional players in this digital initiative.

This scientific event targeted professionals, researchers, students, and heritage practitioners, serving as a unique opportunity for the intersection of academic knowledge with field practice. It significantly contributes to the enhancement of the cultural and architectural capital of the Red City.

Held at the headquarters of the elected council in Marrakech, this conference underscores the growing importance of digital technologies in heritage protection, particularly in light of the transformations occurring within urban environments. Consequently, 3D mapping projects emerge as strategic tools for understanding the city and preserving its memory.
