ICESCO Launches 'Sultan Qaboos' Library: A Cultural Milestone
The International Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is set to inaugurate the 'Sultan Qaboos' Library in Rabat on April 16, 2026. This new establishment, a product of collaboration with the Sultanate of Oman, is designed as a modern space for knowledge and research. The library aims not only to enhance access to information but also to celebrate the rich Islamic cultural heritage and promote cultural exchange within the Islamic world.
A Hub of Knowledge and Cultural Cooperation
This inauguration signifies a pivotal advancement in the cultural infrastructure of ICESCO. The library is named in honor of the late Sultan Qaboos of Oman, who was widely respected for his dedication to culture and science. The project highlights the significance of cultural diplomacy as a means of strengthening ties between institutions, showcasing the financial support provided by Oman for this initiative. Designed to serve researchers, students, and knowledge enthusiasts, the 'Sultan Qaboos' Library merges physical and digital resources. It boasts a collection of over 6,000 printed works, complemented by a digital extension that grants access to nearly 200,000 titles via ICESCO's platform. This integration of traditional and digital formats is aimed at meeting the diverse needs of the community and aligning the library with contemporary standards of knowledge dissemination.
Beyond its modern collections, the library houses rare documents that reflect the wealth of Islamic cultural heritage. Noteworthy items include a calligraphic copy of the Holy Quran by Ibn al-Bawwab, historical manuscripts from Kairouan, and a luxury edition dedicated to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. These invaluable artifacts enhance the library's significance as a cultural heritage site.
Furthermore, the library focuses on engaging younger audiences, featuring dedicated spaces for children and adolescents. This aim is to cultivate a love for reading, enhance cultural awareness, and instill the values of knowledge from an early age. Through this initiative, ICESCO aspires to permanently embed culture in educational trajectories and support the goals of sustainable development.
