Ibn Zohr University Enhances Scientific Cooperation in the Canary Islands
Ibn Zohr University is taking significant steps to solidify its scientific presence in the Canary Islands as part of a broader initiative led by the Souss-Massa Regional Council. This initiative aims to bolster collaboration in research, education, and innovation, with the ultimate goal of generating tangible projects that contribute to regional development. From April 26 to 29, the university is participating in this economic and institutional mission to engage in partnerships that extend beyond mere institutional exchanges, focusing instead on high-value collaborations in the fields of training, research, and innovation.
This mission builds on previous engagements initiated in January when a delegation from the Canary Islands government visited Agadir. Those initial discussions resulted in signed agreements between Ibn Zohr University and the universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna, focusing on academic mobility, joint research, and innovation. The current mission aims to transition this collaboration from a phase of consultation to a more actionable and operational approach.
During this mission, Ibn Zohr University is set to engage in a series of institutional meetings, sector-specific exchanges, and visits to key strategic locations within the archipelago. The primary objective is to identify collaborative opportunities aligned with the development priorities of the Souss-Massa region, particularly in areas such as engineering, technology, water desalination, smart agriculture, and renewable energy. These sectors represent critical challenges for the region and the broader Southern territories.
A highlight of the mission will be the signing of a memorandum of understanding on April 28 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria between Ibn Zohr University and the Canary Islands Technological Institute. This partnership is expected to pave the way for joint applied research projects, technology transfer, scientific result valorization, support for technology start-ups, and the promotion of innovation and scientific entrepreneurship.
Through this initiative, Ibn Zohr University is positioning itself as a vital link between academia, research, and territorial development dynamics, aiming to enhance its international collaborations that can produce concrete impacts on local territories in alignment with technological, economic, and environmental transitions.
More broadly, this mission reflects a shift in how university cooperation is perceived; it is no longer merely about signing more agreements but rather about building meaningful bridges between knowledge, innovation, and development. For Ibn Zohr University, the clear challenge is to leverage international openness to enhance academic visibility and support regional development.
