Hungary's Elite Forces Engage in Major Military Exercise 'African Lion 2026'

The participation of Hungary in one of the world's most significant military exercises commenced with the launch of the Embraer KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft on Friday morning. Hungarian special forces are heading to Morocco to demonstrate their readiness as part of 'African Lion 2026.'

'African Lion 2026' stands as the flagship among the annual maneuvers organized by the U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM). From April 20 to May 8, 2026, over 40 nations will engage in joint training across Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, as reported by honvedelem.hu. The mission's objectives are clearly defined and emphasize the importance of international military cooperation.

For the Hungarian military, this mission transcends a mere routine exercise. Colonel General Gábor Böröndi, the Chief of the Hungarian Defense Staff, underscored the operation's significance, stating, "Participating in international drills on the African continent presents an outstanding opportunity. Not only do we advance the operational and tactical capabilities of our special forces, but we also strengthen military collaboration among partner nations in an unparalleled manner." This highlights Hungary's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities on a global scale.

The Hungarian troops will be stationed at training sites in Morocco, including Agadir, Tifnit, and Cap Draa. The program is intensive and designed to optimize the effectiveness of the forces involved. Through this commitment, Hungary solidifies its role as a reliable partner within the global security architecture, leveraging the challenging conditions of North Africa to further sharpen the professionalism of its soldiers.

In preparation for the international exercise 'Szentes Castle,' engineers and infantry soldiers are training in river crossing operations using state-of-the-art armored personnel carriers. This engagement showcases Hungary's proactive approach to military readiness and international collaboration.
