Significance of 'Dar wa Qada' as a Historical Site
The renowned site known as 'Dar wa Qada' of Abd al-Karim al-Khattabi has officially been designated as a historical landmark. This designation, which encompasses several other historical sites, particularly in the eastern region of Morocco, aims to preserve their cultural heritage and prevent any alterations that could compromise their integrity. The announcement was made by the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication in a recent edition of the 'Official Bulletin', confirming the registration of a group of historical landmarks in the Driouch province as part of the national heritage.
According to the aforementioned source, 'Dar wa Qada' is located on private property in the Terouket municipality within the Rif region of Driouch province. It was officially registered among the historical monuments in Driouch following a request submitted by the president of the Heritage Academy in October 2025. This request involved consultations with a committee that included the Minister of Culture, a representative from the government authority responsible for national territory planning, and a representative from the Ministry of Interior, in accordance with the regulations stipulated in the historic buildings preservation law.
Additional Historical Sites Recognized in Various Provinces
In addition to 'Dar wa Qada', several other significant structures have also been recognized as historical landmarks. In Driouch, the 'La Compania' building, located on state-owned property in the municipality of Tazaghine, and the 'Tlamghait Barracks', also state-owned, in the municipality of Tsaft, have been added to the list of historical sites. Meanwhile, in the province of Jerada, four new historical sites were recorded, including the 'French Military Barracks of Merija' and the 'Jerada Cultural Center' formerly known as 'Saint Barb Church', both of which are situated on state property.
Moreover, various historical structures have been documented in the province of Taourirt, such as the 'French Military Barracks of Berto' and 'Dar al-Basha', both of which are also state-owned. The official bulletin has additionally included 'Old Oued Nashaf Bridge' in Oujda and 'Dovecote Tower' in Zayou, both recognized as part of the national heritage. In Marrakech, 'Marrakech Travelers Hotel' has been classified as a historical site to ensure the preservation of its heritage components and overall structure.
