Strengthening Morocco-India Defense Ties

This visit underscores the growing partnership between India and Morocco, highlighting their mutual commitment to enhance defense capabilities and establish a robust industrial framework.
According to a statement from Tata Advanced Systems shared on social media platform X, their presence in Morocco introduces advanced manufacturing capabilities, engineering expertise, and global experience, while also contributing to the development of local capacities and the qualification of specialized skills.
Strategic Investment in Defense Industry
In September of the previous year, the Moroccan Ministry of National Defense, in conjunction with the Indian Ministry of Defense and Tata Advanced Systems Limited, announced the inauguration of the Tata Advanced Systems Morocco (TASM) facility in Berrechid. This plant, which was the result of an investment agreement signed by the involved parties in September 2024, represents a strategic partnership aimed at bolstering Morocco's industrial capacities within the defense sector.
Located in Berrechid's industrial zone, the TASM factory is set to produce WhAP 8×8 armored combat vehicles for the Royal Armed Forces, as well as for high-growth international markets. This structured project, initiated under royal directives, aims to gradually enable Morocco to achieve self-sufficiency in industrial and technological domains related to defense. Furthermore, it serves as a catalyst for developing an innovative industrial ecosystem and creating qualified job opportunities.
Upon its opening, the factory plans to integrate 35 percent of locally sourced components, a figure that is expected to rise to 50 percent through significant investments in training and the integration of national suppliers. The Berrechid facility is projected to foster regional economic growth by generating 90 direct jobs and 250 indirect jobs, alongside a capacity expansion plan that anticipates a substantial increase in production in the medium term. Additionally, it will provide Moroccan talents with training opportunities, career advancement, and technological expertise in the production and maintenance of advanced defense vehicles.
Equipped with modern infrastructure, the factory is poised to serve as a regional hub for exporting WhAP 8×8 vehicles, particularly targeting the African market. Furthermore, Sanjay Rana, the Indian Ambassador to Morocco, has revealed that advanced discussions are underway between Rabat and New Delhi to expand industrial and defense cooperation. This collaboration extends beyond the establishment of the Tata plant in Berrechid last year, encompassing an ambitious project for the joint production of a complete aircraft in Morocco and increasing Indian investments in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automotive, and renewable energy.
Rana emphasized in an interview with Hespress that both Morocco and India possess significant potential to enhance trade and tourism exchanges, with expectations for discussions on a future free trade agreement between the two nations, as well as the introduction of direct flights to support the flow of tourists and investments.
