Fes Enhances Urban Transport Infrastructure for the Upcoming World Cup
As preparations ramp up for the 2030 World Cup, the city of Fes is taking significant steps to modernize its urban transport system by launching a new bus line, designed to enhance public transit efficiency. This initiative, known as the "Tram-Bus" or "Bus Rapid Transit" system, aims to improve mobility and adapt to the city's increasing growth. The Fes Regional Development Company, which oversees the project, plans to open bids for the technical study related to this new line on May 27, marking a crucial step towards realizing the first phase of this transformative project.
The collective transport plan for the Fes urban area, developed in 2025, recommended the establishment of five public transport lines within dedicated pathways, which are expected to be completed progressively by 2040. The first line will be launched through a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of the Interior, the Fes-Meknes region, the local council, and the Fes municipality, representing the initial phase of this extensive project.
The anticipated study will span eight months, focusing on diagnosing the challenges faced by the transport sector, including significant pressure on the existing bus network, inadequate connections to peripheral areas, a lack of multimodal exchange stations, and congestion on major thoroughfares. Additionally, the study will aim to identify the optimal technical model for the project, develop a comprehensive urban and architectural vision for the stations and routes involved, estimate financial costs, and establish a timeline for implementation.
This study will utilize recent data, encompassing the current transport situation, urban planning documents, and the results of the 2024 general population census, alongside economic and social indicators and future development projects. This initiative is part of a broader series of major projects that Fes is counting on to enhance its infrastructure in preparation for the 2030 World Cup. In 2025, the city established the local development company "Fes Transport and Mobility," with an initial capital of 5 million dirhams and an investment program reaching 566 million dirhams, set to extend until 2035.
