Escalating Protests at Ibn Zohr Regional Hospital in Marrakech
The regional office of the National Public Health Union in Marrakech has announced a significant escalation in protests at the Ibn Zohr Regional Hospital, following what they termed as a failure of dialogue during a meeting called by the hospital director on June 18, 2026. This meeting was intended to address the long-standing demands of health workers, yet it yielded no tangible solutions or clear commitments regarding the issues raised.
According to a statement received by the media, the meeting did not produce any practical commitments or satisfactory responses to the demands put forth. Consequently, attendees organized a protest, which was followed by a march within the hospital's facilities to express their discontent with what they perceive as a policy of procrastination and disregard for the administrative, financial, and professional rights of health sector employees.
The union condemned the lack of responsiveness to legitimate demands previously outlined in a communiqué issued on June 11, 2026, and held the hospital director fully accountable for the growing unrest within the health institution and its affiliated hospitals. They warned that this situation could negatively impact the professional environment and the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.
Moreover, the regional office expressed its rejection of any infringements on the administrative and financial rights of health workers, particularly concerning the timely issuance of administrative documents and rightful compensation. They called on the relevant authorities to launch an investigation into the conditions at the Daoud El Antaki Hospital, especially regarding the prolonged closure of the surgical complex, which has deprived citizens of essential health services for months.
The union reiterated its commitment to all the demands it deems fair and just, vowing to continue advocating for these rights through various lawful forms of protest.
In this context, the regional office announced a second protest scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM, in front of the administration of Ibn Zohr Regional Hospital. They urged all health professionals to participate actively and responsibly in this significant demonstration.
Additionally, the union hinted at the possibility of resorting to more escalated forms of protest if the administration continues its alleged policy of procrastination and neglect regarding the issues faced by the health institutions under its management.
The regional office concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights and gains of health workers, calling for a response to the raised demands to ensure improved working conditions and the quality of healthcare services available to the public.
