Enhancements in Maritime Connections Between Spain and North Africa

Enhancements in Maritime Connections Between Spain and North Africa

Recent Developments in Maritime Services

In recent weeks, regular maritime connections between Spain and North Africa have witnessed significant adjustments, marked by the activation and reorganization of several feeder services in the Western Mediterranean. Three prominent shipping lines—X-Press Feeders, Hapag-Lloyd, and Diamond Line, a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Lines Europe—have implemented changes that impact connections among key ports, specifically Valencia, Algeciras, Tangier Med, Casablanca, and Sfax. This evolving regional network is increasingly focused on enhancing frequency and accessibility for container traffic.

Feeder services play a vital role in maritime transport, serving as crucial links in the shipping industry. Unlike the major oceanic routes operated by larger vessels that traverse long distances, feeder lines connect nearby or regional ports, facilitating access to broader international networks. Essentially, these services act as proximity connections that streamline the transfer of containers between major ports, transshipment terminals, and import-export markets.

Key Changes in Service Operations

The first notable change comes from X-Press Feeders, which has reintroduced its SPX2 service—a connection originally launched in October 2025 between Valencia, Lisbon, and Casablanca but later discontinued. Initially, this route operated with bi-monthly departures and had its capacity marketed by Ocean Network Express under the name Spain Morocco Portugal. Linerlytica reported that the service resumed on October 22, 2025, featuring a rotation of Valencia–Lisbon–Casablanca–Valencia with the vessel _Perseus_ assigned to the route.

In this new iteration, X-Press Feeders has shifted its approach by replacing Casablanca with Tangier Med, eliminating the Lisbon stop and transforming the connection into a direct link between Valencia and Morocco's primary container port. This adjustment is significant for the market, as Valencia now gains a more direct connection with Tangier Med, a port that serves as a maritime distribution hub in the Strait, allowing for connections to other international services. The removal of intermediate stops simplifies the route and may facilitate clearer scheduling for logistics operators, freight forwarders, and shippers working between the Spanish Mediterranean coast and Morocco.

X-Press Feeders already operated other services in this corridor, including SPX1, which connects Barcelona, Valencia, Algeciras, Tangier Med, and Casablanca before returning to Barcelona. Additionally, SPX3 maintains stops at Tangier Med, Algeciras, Lisbon, and Leixões, according to the operator's public schedule. The reactivation of SPX2 introduces a new option to a network that already combined Spanish, Portuguese, and Moroccan ports.

The second significant update involves Diamond Line, the COSCO Shipping Lines Europe subsidiary specializing in short-distance and feeder services. Linerlytica announced the launch of the Spain Morocco Service (SMS), which commenced a weekly connection between Valencia and Casablanca on June 10, 2026. This service is operated by the container ship _Contship Ivy_, with a capacity of 925 TEUs.

The introduction of this direct line between Valencia and Casablanca enables COSCO to establish a more specific connection between the Spanish Mediterranean and Morocco's main commercial port. Unlike Tangier Med, which primarily functions as a transshipment hub linked to international networks, Casablanca has a profile more closely associated with Morocco's import-export market. Consequently, the Valencia-Casablanca link could prove particularly advantageous for shipments with origins or final destinations within the economic landscape of the Moroccan city.

The new SMS service complements the wider network already maintained by COSCO and OOCL in this region. OOCL's public schedule indicates the Turkey Spain Morocco Express (TSM), which includes stops at Piraeus, Izmir, Gemlik, Derince, Port of Aliaga, Valencia, Casablanca, Algeciras, and Barcelona. This line offers a longer route, combining ports from Turkey, Greece, Spain, and Morocco. In contrast to this broader scheme, the SMS provides a more direct solution between Valencia and Casablanca.

Diamond Line's operations in Morocco align with a strategy COSCO Shipping communicated following the establishment of its Casablanca subsidiary in 2024. The company positioned Diamond Line as part of the development of regional services in North Africa and linked the TSM with connections between Marmara ports, Spain, and Casablanca.

The third adjustment pertains to relations with Tunisia. Hapag-Lloyd has incorporated capacity under the designation IRS in the Spain Tunis X-PRESS rotation, operated by X-Press Feeders. This is not a standalone service from Hapag-Lloyd, but rather a commercial offering based on an already operated rotation by the feeder operator.

Sources confirm that X-Press Feeders includes the Spain Tunis X-PRESS in its service network and that there is a regular maritime connection between Algeciras and Sfax operated by X-Press Feeders. Fluent Cargo identifies the Algeciras-Sfax route as a scheduled maritime service between Spain and Tunisia, with departures every week or every two weeks, and X-Press Feeders is one of the operators involved. Information attributed to Alphaliner adds the port of Marsaxlokk in Malta to the rotation connecting Algeciras with Sfax.

This connection positions Algeciras as a crucial link to Tunisia within the Western Mediterranean feeder network, complementing Valencia's role. While Valencia is tied to new connections with Morocco, Algeciras remains significant as a stopover for traffic moving between the Strait, Malta, and the Tunisian coast.

The coincidence of these developments indicates a growing focus among shipping lines on short-distance connections between the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. In these trades, feeder services enable closer ports to be linked more frequently with smaller vessels than those used on major oceanic routes. For shippers and freight forwarders, the most significant outcome is the emergence of more alternatives for moving containers between Spain, Morocco, and Tunisia, whether through direct links or via connecting ports like Tangier Med, Algeciras, or Marsaxlokk.

The reorganization also allows for a clearer differentiation of each port's role. Tangier Med acts as a major maritime connection platform, capable of distributing cargo to other services. Casablanca maintains a function more closely tied to the Moroccan market, while Sfax incorporates the Tunisian component into the regional network. Valencia expands its role as Spain's Mediterranean gateway for new connections to Morocco, while Algeciras retains its strategic enclave status within the routes of the Strait and the Western Mediterranean.

The case of Tunisia further illustrates that this corridor does not solely cater to general traffic. Tanger Med News reported in the fourth quarter of 2025 the launch of a seasonal service by CMA CGM between Sfax, Tangier Med, and Valencia related to the 2025-2026 date export campaign, featuring weekly frequency and two assigned vessels. Although this is a distinct line from those of X-Press and Hapag-Lloyd, it reflects the existence of specific logistical needs between Tunisia, Morocco, and Spain, including dry and refrigerated goods.

While these new services do not singularly alter the overall balance of maritime transport in the Western Mediterranean, they expand the options available to operators. In a short-distance route, having a direct call, weekly departures, or an additional alternative can significantly influence logistics chain planning. This relevance of the movements introduced by X-Press Feeders, Hapag-Lloyd, and Diamond Line lies in the fact that it is not merely about adding lines but rather providing more combinations for connecting ports that are already part of a growing regional network.
