Embracing Sustainable Urban Development in Morocco: Insights from a Scientific Day in Marrakech

Advancing Urban Planning through Integration and Innovation

A recent study day held on Saturday in Marrakech, themed "Sustainable Development in Morocco: From Concept to Implementation," highlighted the critical need for an integrated approach to urban planning that harmonizes innovation, sustainability, and the preservation of Morocco's architectural and cultural identity. This event, initiated by Ménara Préfa, brought together a diverse group of experts, architects, engineers, urban planners, industrial stakeholders, and both public and private decision-makers, fostering collective reflection on the current and future challenges facing urban development in Morocco.

During the discussions, participants emphasized the importance of designing public spaces and infrastructures that meet performance, resilience, and sustainability standards, especially in the context of rapid urbanization, economic transformations, and the Kingdom's development ambitions. Nadia Chaachou, the commercial director of Menara Holding, expressed that this second edition of the "Scientific Days of Menara Préfa" aims to facilitate dialogue among professionals, experts, and decision-makers regarding the challenges of territorial development, particularly in its public dimension.

Chaachou noted that Morocco is experiencing an extraordinary dynamic fueled by its international openness and the significant events it will host in the coming years. This evolution necessitates a rethinking of urban planning models to align with citizens' expectations and the requirements of sustainable development. She underscored that future urban development must adhere to essential criteria, notably sustainability, the integration of smart technologies, and the ability to endure over time, all while ensuring optimal resource use and enhancing the quality of life for users.

Innovative Approaches to Preserve Cultural Identity

In line with this vision, Chaachou pointed out that the incorporation of technological innovations must respect national identity specifics, advocating for development projects that blend modernity, performance, and the enhancement of Morocco's architectural and cultural heritage. Hicham Zbidi, the deputy general director of Ménara Préfa, highlighted that the transformations occurring in the Kingdom provide new perspectives for the urban planning sector, necessitating a thorough examination of the urban models that should be prioritized to support this dynamic.

Zbidi argued that the development of cities and infrastructures should be grounded in a sustainable vision that incorporates technological innovations, new usage patterns, and environmental imperatives while remaining true to Morocco's cultural and heritage specifics. He stressed the importance of preserving the authenticity and identity of Moroccan territories in planning projects, asserting that the modernization of urban spaces must be continuous with the Kingdom's architectural and cultural legacy.

The day's agenda included two panels dedicated to the challenges of sustainable planning, allowing various speakers to share their experiences and best practices in the design, implementation, and operation of urban projects. The discussions also focused on infrastructure quality, territorial resilience, resource optimization, and enhancing citizens' living conditions. Through this initiative, Ménara Préfa reaffirms its commitment to knowledge sharing and promoting innovative solutions that contribute to sustainable and inclusive urban development, supporting the transformations occurring in Moroccan cities.
