The Arab Republic of Egypt has reiterated its steadfast support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, emphasizing its endorsement of Security Council Resolution 2797. In a statement made from Cairo on Monday, Egyptian officials expressed their commitment to a consensus-driven political process aimed at resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue. They highlighted that the autonomy initiative, which operates within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, stands as the most viable and realistic solution to bring an end to the longstanding conflict.
This affirmation of support was articulated during the inaugural session of the Moroccan-Egyptian Coordination and Follow-up Committee, co-chaired by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. During this meeting, Cairo reiterated its backing for the United Nations roadmap, which places the autonomy initiative at the core of the political discourse regarding the Moroccan Sahara.
In addition, Egypt lauded the contributions of King Mohammed VI in his role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, commending his efforts to bolster the resilience of Palestinians in Jerusalem. The Egyptian government recognized his work in preserving the cultural and religious heritage of the city, as well as maintaining its legal and historical significance as a beacon of coexistence among the Abrahamic faiths. Furthermore, it acknowledged the initiatives undertaken by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency, which focus on social and humanitarian programs aimed at supporting the residents of Jerusalem.
On a continental scale, Egypt also praised Morocco's initiatives aimed at enhancing South-South cooperation, particularly those that facilitate Sahel countries' access to the Atlantic Ocean, such as the Atlantic Initiative and the Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline project.
At the bilateral level, both nations expressed their ambitions to evolve their relationship into a comprehensive strategic partnership. This partnership would focus on revitalizing trade, encouraging mutual investments, and establishing joint industrial projects that maximize the economic potential of both Morocco and Egypt. Such efforts aim to cater to mutual interests and reinforce collaborative ties between Rabat and Cairo.
