Egypt and Morocco Strengthen Agricultural Ties for Sustainable Development

Strengthening Bilateral Agricultural Cooperation

In a significant move to enhance agricultural collaboration, Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, engaged in discussions with Ahmed El Bouari, Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests. This meeting, which occurred on the sidelines of the inaugural session of the Egyptian-Moroccan Joint Committee in Cairo, sought to explore avenues for deepening bilateral ties within the agricultural sector. The talks emphasized the potential for expanding technical cooperation, increasing trade, and fostering new investment opportunities that would benefit both nations.

During the discussions, both ministers recognized the pivotal role of agricultural integration in confronting escalating regional and global challenges, notably the impacts of climate change, while also enhancing food security in their respective countries. Farouk articulated the significance of collaboration with Morocco as a fundamental aspect of Egypt’s strategy to strengthen partnerships across Arab and African nations. He pointed out the necessity of establishing a cohesive platform for agricultural innovation, indicating Egypt's willingness to share its expertise while also drawing from Morocco’s knowledge in the blue economy and the development of fisheries value chains.

Collaborative Initiatives and Future Prospects

To expedite the process of cooperation, Farouk instructed the agricultural relations sector to arrange an urgent virtual meeting that would include business leaders and technical specialists from both Egypt and Morocco. The objective of this meeting would be to pinpoint practical strategies for advancing cooperation and to formulate a roadmap for joint investments. The parties agreed to implement a field-level work program that focuses on technology transfer and the sharing of expertise. Morocco has shown a keen interest in Egypt's proficiency in the date palm sector, particularly regarding production techniques and integrated pest management, while Egypt is eager to learn from Morocco's advancements in fish processing, packaging, and vessel tracking systems.

Additionally, both countries committed to collaborating on the development of salinity- and climate-resilient seeds, enhancing veterinary vaccines, and increasing the utilization of treated water in agricultural practices. The ministers urged private sector stakeholders to intensify investments in collaborative agricultural projects. They recognized the need to facilitate market access through digitalization and real-time sharing of phytosanitary and agricultural quarantine documents, aiming to accelerate bilateral trade flows. The expansion of specialized training programs via Egypt’s International Centre for Agriculture was also agreed upon, to bolster skills exchange among technical personnel.

In his remarks, El Bouari commended Egypt's agricultural advancements and highlighted the profound connections between Cairo and Rabat. He noted that this dialogue occurs at a crucial juncture amidst rising global climate pressures. He emphasized that deeper integration, especially in areas such as salinity-resistant seeds and advanced irrigation techniques, has become increasingly essential. El Bouari asserted that by merging Egypt’s technical expertise with Morocco’s manufacturing capabilities, a model for Arab economic integration could emerge, reinforcing his country’s dedication to promoting joint agricultural investments that will enhance food sovereignty in both nations.
