Egypt and Morocco Launch Joint Coordination Committee for Economic Integration

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

On Sunday, Egypt and Morocco embarked on a significant milestone in their bilateral relations by inaugurating the first session of a joint coordination and follow-up committee. This initiative, as underscored by government officials, is designed to pave the way for comprehensive economic integration between the two nations. The arrival of Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch at Cairo International Airport on Sunday evening marked the commencement of this new partnership, where he was warmly welcomed by his Egyptian counterpart, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. Akhannouch, who is leading a distinguished government delegation, aims to formalize this collaboration through the committee, which is viewed as a vital mechanism for enhancing bilateral cooperation.

The welcoming ceremony was marked by an official guard of honor and the playing of both nations' anthems, with notable attendees including Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Mohamed Farid, and the Moroccan Ambassador to Cairo, Mohamed Ait Ouali. The next day, Madbouly and Akhannouch are set to engage in bilateral discussions at the government headquarters located in the New Administrative Capital. This meeting will be followed by an expanded session involving both delegations, where several key documents and agreements will be signed to further solidify cooperation across various sectors.

Preparatory Meetings and Future Collaboration

The prime ministerial visit is a follow-up to a preparatory meeting that took place on Sunday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates. This session was co-chaired by Ambassador Ihab Fahmy, Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs, alongside Ambassador Khalid bin Sheikh, Director of Maghreb, Arab, and Islamic Affairs at the Moroccan Foreign Ministry. During these preparatory talks, representatives from over 50 ministries and technical entities from both countries participated, reaching a consensus on crucial areas for enhanced cooperation.

Ambassador Fahmy emphasized that this committee signifies the first high-level mechanism of its nature between the two nations, fulfilling the aspirations of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and King Mohammed VI to elevate bilateral relations and activate economic and trade frameworks that foster a genuine partnership. This diplomatic endeavor is particularly relevant amidst the backdrop of “highly turbulent regional and international conditions,” as described by Fahmy, which are influenced by ongoing military operations involving Iran. He articulated Egypt’s strong condemnation of Iranian attacks on fellow Arab states and reiterated Egypt's commitment to engaging with regional and international stakeholders to halt the current conflict and facilitate a truce. These initiatives aim to avert the region from descending into chaos and potential widespread warfare.
