Ecuador Strengthens Ties with Morocco as Gateway to Africa

Ecuador's Export Ambitions in Morocco

On April 17, 2023, Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, conveyed her country's eagerness to enhance its export offerings in Morocco, which serves as a strategic entry point into the African market. Following discussions with her Moroccan counterpart, Naser Burita, Sommerfeld emphasized that the economies of Ecuador and Morocco do not compete with one another; rather, they complement each other. She highlighted promising opportunities in various sectors, including agro-industry, fertilizers, value-added products, and logistics.

Moreover, the Ecuadorian minister expressed a strong interest in leveraging Morocco's expertise in port management and logistical security. She stated, "We deeply value the interaction between our business sectors. Dialogue between business associations should translate into concrete alliances, investments, and joint projects. Our goal is clear: to move from potential to implementation." This commitment underscores Ecuador's proactive approach to fostering economic collaboration and enhancing trade relations with Morocco.

Support for Moroccan Autonomy Proposal

In addition to trade discussions, Sommerfeld shared Ecuador's support for Morocco's proposal regarding autonomy for Western Sahara. She defended UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which positions this initiative as a foundational solution to the ongoing conflict. For Ecuador, the concept of genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is viewed as the most viable and singular approach to resolving this territorial dispute. Notably, in December 2024, the Ecuadorian government suspended its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), signaling a shift in diplomatic relations.

During the joint press conference, Moroccan Foreign Minister Burita highlighted the significant advancements that have occurred since Quito's decision, marking the beginning of a new phase characterized by mutual trust and strategic cooperation between the two nations. Burita pointed out the establishment of the Ecuadorian embassy in Rabat a year ago, the upcoming inauguration of the Moroccan embassy in Quito in September, and the formation of a joint economic commission aimed at laying the groundwork for investment protection agreements and measures against double taxation. These initiatives are designed to elevate commercial exchanges to reflect the strong political relationship between Ecuador and Morocco.
