The Moroccan National Press Union, represented by its regional secretary Abdellah Talbi, has issued a stern statement in response to the ongoing controversy regarding the alleged benefits received by individuals referred to as 'media correspondents' during the Eid al-Adha celebrations. The union emphasized that such allegations not only tarnish the image of professional journalists but also undermine their esteemed status within society.
In the statement, it was pointed out that an article published on a news website, which claimed that media correspondents were excluded from receiving their share of the Eid sacrifice, included descriptions and insinuations that are far removed from the reality of professional journalism. The article presented journalists in a negative light, depicting them as individuals seeking handouts or privileges. This portrayal, the union argues, is detrimental to the integrity of the media and misrepresents journalists as mere beneficiaries of seasonal favors rather than as dedicated professionals.
Talbi reiterated that the profession of journalism is legally regulated and governed by clear professional standards, upheld by representative institutions that defend journalists' rights and dignity. He stressed that professional journalists, regardless of their legal status, cannot be reduced to a stereotype that undermines their dignity or misrepresents them to the public as seekers of temporary advantages.
Furthermore, the union's president declared their innocence of any actions or behaviors perpetrated by individuals exploiting the title of 'journalist' for personal gain or short-term benefits. Such actions, he noted, not only tarnish the profession but also jeopardize its credibility. Talbi urged the authorities in the Marrakech-Safi region to verify the credentials of individuals claiming to represent journalists, ensuring that the law is applied and preventing any undeserved benefits outside the professional and legal frameworks governing the sector.
The regional secretary also called on journalists and media professionals to unite against any actions that could harm the journalistic community or distort its image, affirming that the union reserves the right to pursue legal actions against anyone found guilty of defaming the press or violating journalists' professional dignity.
