Congo's Visa-Free Access for All Africans: A New Era for Moroccan Travelers

Congo Set to Eliminate Visa Requirements for African Nationals

In a significant move towards enhancing regional integration, the Republic of Congo has announced that it will abolish visa requirements for all African nationals, effective January 1, 2027. This pivotal declaration was made by President Denis Sassou N’Guesso during the African Development Bank Group’s (AfDB) 2026 Annual Meetings held in Brazzaville on Africa Day. President Sassou N’Guesso emphasized that nationals from every African country will be able to travel to Congo without the need for a visa, urging other African states to transcend their tendencies of selfishness and nationalism. He advocated for a deeper commitment to regional integration through frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The announcement was met with enthusiasm, receiving extended applause from a diverse audience that included heads of state, ministers, diplomats, investors, and representatives from civil society sectors, all gathered at the Kintele Conference Center. This decision is particularly beneficial for Moroccan passport holders, who currently must secure a visa upon arrival to enter Congo. As per the Passport Index, Morocco's passport boasts a Mobility Score of 83, granting visa-free access to 41 countries, with an additional 38 countries offering visa on arrival or e-visa options, and four countries with eTA arrangements. This upcoming policy change will add another visa-free destination to the extensive list available for Moroccan travelers.

A Growing Trend of Visa-Free Travel Across Africa

The move by Congo is part of a broader trend across the African continent, where nations are increasingly dismantling visa barriers to foster a new era of borderless mobility. This transformation is instrumental in reshaping intra-African travel dynamics and bolstering continental integration in alignment with the ambitious Agenda 2063. Countries like Seychelles and The Gambia have already set precedents by offering visa-free access to all Africans, while Rwanda has adopted a similar policy for all African Union member states. Other nations, such as Benin and Kenya, have also made strides in easing travel for African nationals, indicating a collective shift towards more accessible movement across borders.

During the meetings, Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank Group, called for enhanced continental integration and the strengthening of African institutions, reminding attendees that Africa is often viewed through a lens of deficiency rather than recognizing its abundant resources and potential. He highlighted the necessity of building economic agency through collaborative efforts and innovative financing mechanisms tailored for Africa's unique context.

For Moroccan travelers, Congo's new visa-free policy not only simplifies access but also unveils a wealth of cultural and natural treasures. The capital city of Brazzaville, strategically located along the Congo River opposite Kinshasa, offers various attractions, including the Basilique Sainte-Anne, the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Mausoleum, and vibrant open-air markets. Beyond the urban landscape, the Odzala-Kokoua National Park is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including western lowland gorillas and forest elephants. The coastal city of Pointe-Noire, known for its picturesque sandy beaches and lush forests, alongside the stunning Loufoulakari and Bela waterfalls, presents breathtaking views of Congo's expansive rainforest, the second largest globally.

The 2026 Annual Meetings in Brazzaville are set to continue under the theme “Mobilizing Development Financing for Africa at Scale in a Fragmented World,” emphasizing the critical need for collaborative investment in infrastructure and sustainable development across the continent.
