Concerns Arise Over School Exam Content and Recent Incidents in Morocco

Public Outcry Over Exam Questions Reflecting Outdated Gender Stereotypes

On Wednesday, the news source "Bayane Al-Yawm" reported that a coalition of political figures, civil society organizations, and various stakeholders expressed their shock and condemnation regarding the nature of certain questions posed to students during the official examination tests. They argued that these questions belong to a bygone era, reinforcing discrimination and stereotypical images against women. A notable concern was raised regarding a question presented to first-year Baccalaureate students in the 2026 regional unified exam. This query, which appeared in the French language test within the written expression section, asked students for their opinions on the belief that women were created solely for marriage and childbirth, inviting them to support their views with arguments and real-life examples. The source emphasized that women, contrary to the implications of this examination question, are not created for the dictates of others, nor are they programmed to fit into preconceived social roles. Their existence is not limited to marriage, childbirth, or fulfilling societal expectations.

Municipal Services Face Scrutiny Amidst Growing Cleanliness Concerns

Additionally, the same publication highlighted that several municipal administrations, including those in Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Fès-Meknès, and Marrakech-Safi, have urgently questioned local community leaders who manage waste collection about the reasons behind the storage of new waste containers in communal warehouses, rather than distributing them to neighborhoods in need of these essential facilities. This situation coincides with increasing pressure on cleanliness services across numerous cities, raising inquiries about the barriers preventing timely deployment of publicly funded equipment for the benefit of citizens. Furthermore, "Bayane Al-Yawm" reported on the deteriorating condition of the road linking Inzegane and Ait Melloul via the Souss River Bridge, which has suffered extensive damage due to potholes and cracks, despite being one of the most crucial routes in the Souss-Massa region. This degradation poses safety risks for motorists and tarnishes the image of the region, prompting questions about the delays in maintenance and rehabilitation works.

In related news, "Al-Masaa" reported that civil protection officers successfully retrieved the body of a child from the waters of the Bin Ouidane dam in the Azilal region following a tragic drowning incident during a recreational outing with friends. The local gendarmerie has since launched an investigation under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutor's office to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. In another case, the Marrakech Court of First Instance saw the arraignment of two individuals, including a nightclub manager, before the public prosecutor's office on charges related to a variety of misdemeanors. The prosecutor decided to remand them in local custody pending further investigation, with initial court sessions scheduled for the same day to address the charges against them.

Moreover, "Al-Masaa" also reported the arrest of five individuals with criminal records in Ouled Nma, aged between 20 and 27, four of whom had previous convictions. They were detained under suspicion of involvement in a case concerning violence and threats involving the use of bladed weapons. The suspects have been held in police custody as investigations proceed under the supervision of the public prosecutor's office to uncover all relevant circumstances and motivations behind these criminal acts.
