Canada Endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Sahara Dispute Resolution

Canada's Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan

In a significant diplomatic development, Canada has officially recognized Morocco's autonomy plan as a viable foundation for achieving a mutually accepted resolution to the ongoing regional dispute concerning the Sahara. This affirmation was articulated in a statement from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which followed a recent telephone discussion between Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.

The statement, which was subsequently disseminated by the Moroccan news agency MAP, highlighted Ottawa's acknowledgment of the Sahara issue's critical importance to Morocco. It also referenced United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, dated October 31, 2025, underscoring Canada's view of the Moroccan plan as a serious and credible initiative aimed at fostering a fair and enduring solution to the conflict.

Furthermore, the Ottawa statement reiterated the necessity for a lasting, just, and mutually agreeable political solution, in line with the principles laid out in the United Nations Charter and pertinent resolutions from the Security Council. Minister Anand’s commitment to this cause was evident as she expressed her desire to undertake an official visit to Morocco in the near future. This visit is expected to provide a platform for enhancing bilateral dialogue and intensifying consultations regarding the Sahara issue.
