Bacha Coffee's Grand Opening in Tokyo
In a significant move that marks a new chapter in the world of specialty coffee, Bacha Coffee, the esteemed Moroccan coffee brand, has launched its inaugural location in Japan. Situated in the upscale Ginza district of Tokyo, renowned for its luxury retail and vibrant atmosphere, this opening occurred in December 2025, capturing the attention of coffee enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. The establishment has quickly gained popularity, often drawing long lines of eager customers, a testament to the high demand for its exquisite offerings.
The three-story coffee house spans an impressive 377 square meters, with the first floor housing a boutique that showcases over 200 varieties of premium 100% Arabica coffee beans, along with an array of coffee-related accessories. The upper levels are dedicated to coffee rooms designed for an intimate experience, with a seating capacity of 40. The second-floor coffee room is aptly named '1910', while the third floor carries the name 'Marrakech', both reflecting the rich heritage and history of Bacha Coffee that dates back to its roots in Marrakech in the early 20th century.
Heritage and Global Expansion
Bacha Coffee's origins can be traced back to the Dar el Bacha, a historic landmark in the heart of Marrakech, where freshly brewed coffee was served in a traditional Moroccan manner to an elite clientele until its closure after World War II. The site has since been transformed into the Museum of Cultural Confluences, and in 2017, Taha Bouqdib, a French-Moroccan entrepreneur, initiated the revival of the coffee house within the museum's courtyard. Bouqdib is also the co-founder and CEO of V3 Gourmet, a luxury gourmet lifestyle group that includes the renowned TWG Tea brand, which has established a presence in multiple countries.
Following the successful reopening of the original Marrakech location in 2019, Bacha Coffee swiftly expanded internationally, opening its first overseas branch in Singapore in the same year. As of March 2026, the brand has successfully established 43 shops across 16 countries and regions, employing various operational structures such as franchises and partnerships. In Japan, the franchise is managed by Tokyu Gourmet Front Co., Ltd, which has a solid track record in the gourmet sector, having operated TWG Tea in Japan since 2010.
Bacha Coffee prides itself on sourcing its beans directly from 35 coffee-producing regions, establishing partnerships with farms and cooperatives selected by its dedicated procurement team. The green coffee beans are then transported to Marrakech for roasting in small batches, ensuring each coffee is prepared with care according to a tailored roasting profile. The brand utilizes traditional drum roasters, allowing for lower temperature roasting that preserves the beans' unique flavors.
Guests visiting the coffee rooms are treated to a one-of-a-kind experience, where coffee is served in elegant golden gooseneck pots inspired by early 20th-century Arab design. Each serving is complemented by Bacha Coffee chantilly cream, raw sugar, and cracked vanilla bean, steering clear of additives that could alter the pure taste of the coffee. Notably, espresso drinks are not offered, allowing patrons to savor the authentic flavors and aromas of the coffee in a manner faithful to its traditional Moroccan roots.
Looking ahead, Bacha Coffee has ambitious plans for growth in Japan, with intentions to open additional outlets in major cities throughout the country, aiming to expand its global footprint to 50 locations over the next decade.
