Appeal Court Continues to Hear Case of Prosecutor's Deputy in Fes Corruption Scandal

The financial crimes chamber of the Court of Appeal in Rabat continues to deliberate on the case of the deputy prosecutor general for the Court of Appeal in Fes. This individual has previously received a prison sentence along with a monetary fine concerning allegations of extortion against parliamentarian Hassan Belmouqadem, who is a member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party. The allegations revolve around a sum of 500,000 dirhams that was purportedly solicited in exchange for altering details in a legal case involving nightclub security personnel owned by the parliamentarian in the Moulay Yacoub region, situated on the route connecting Fes and Meknes.

Recently, the chamber decided to postpone its ruling on the case until June 24, in response to a request made by the defendant's legal counsel seeking additional time to prepare their defense.

Initially, the financial crimes chamber of the Court of Appeal in Rabat acquitted the defendant of the charges of fraud and abuse of power but found him guilty on other counts, sentencing him to two years in prison, with one year of the sentence suspended, as well as a fine of 5,000 dirhams, while ordering him to bear the costs without coercion.

The case dates back to November 2023, when parliamentarian Hassan Belmouqadem filed a complaint accusing the judicial official, the deputy prosecutor general in Fes, of involvement in incidents related to the receipt of a financial sum amidst a legal dispute concerning the nightclub's security personnel.

According to the information contained in the file, there was an incident involving the delivery of the financial amount inside a café near the highway linking Fes and Rabat, which has been documented as evidence presented to the court. Furthermore, informed sources indicated that the case saw subsequent developments following intervention from the relevant authorities, leading to the referral of the file to an investigating judge, after which the judicial official was pursued under conditions of release following the referral to the financial crimes chamber at the Court of Appeal in Rabat.

This case continues to attract significant attention due to the nature of the parties involved, as observers eagerly await the outcomes of upcoming court sessions for further judicial developments.
